On The One Show, (BBC), this evening the ubiquitous Ed Balls made an appearance, for reason unknown, but something to do with him conducting a history vox pop on the most famous English monarch. Principle contenders were Alfred the Great and Elizabeth 1st who the learned Balls cited as the first English queen; after embarrassed glances from the presenters someone mentioned Mary 1st.
Both are completely wrong as we all know but this bloke was an MP for god's sake and supposedly should have a basic knowledge of our history.
As a footnote Mr Testes Alfred only ruled Southern England with the North and Eastern England being under Danelaw. angry.gif

No she went on to marry king John and killed him with a surfeit of lettuce. Before my time.

Me thinks you chaps are not taking this seriously. cool.gif . Magna Carta is probably the most misused piece of literary propaganda of the last 1000 years. John tore it up, his son used it to try and curry favour with the barons and nothing in it dealt with the plight of the peasant. Every monarch up to the Protectorate "played" with it for their own ends.

But of course we can't expect the present political elite to bother themselves with such trivia. rolleyes.gif
