Walking down one of our unsurfaced country tracks this evening, just on the outskirts of Newbury, I met a Dublin registered van heading in the other direction. It pulled up and the driver, in his early 20s, asked me in a thick Dublin accent (I know Ireland well) 'Where does this go?'. I asked him what he was looking for and he just repeated the question. 'Nowhere in particular', I replied, already rather suspicious. They moved off past me down the track.
After they returned - having discovered that 'nowhere in particular' was an accurate description - I took a photo of their licence plate.
As I reached the end of the lane I discovered our charming overseas visitors waiting for me. The driver wound down his window and said, in a not particularly friendly way, 'Did you take my plate?'. I considered various possible replies but just looked at him for a few seconds then walked on. They drove away and I didn't see the van again.
I reported the incident via 101 (the TVP non-emergency number) when I got home. Obviously no crime had been committed but the fact that they'd waited to challenge me about my not-particularly-covert photography raised my suspicions considerably.
So, if you see a dark grey Transit with a Dublin licence plate starting 12-D, take care.

QUOTE (NORTHENDER @ Aug 7 2012, 10:04 AM) All you have to do is look around you and and think which of these people do not like me (we all know the answer to that) and who knows me and pass on little tit bits. Now back to sharpening the pencils that's a good boy. like I thought, clearly a little simple

QUOTE (NORTHENDER @ Aug 7 2012, 09:30 AM) All thieves aint they? The old saying is right "Take one to know one" We know that some office boys steal from the company but do we tar all office workers with the same brush? The van occupants may have been up to no good but nobody witnessed them doing anything other than driving down a country road. Sorry but when I see a pitbull running down the road I don't automatically think "nice doggy" I think "heres trouble.

QUOTE (Sherlock @ Aug 7 2012, 12:27 PM) I wouldn't have posted here if they hadn't followed me and asked me whether I'd taken a photo and it was the fact that they did - and bothered to clock me doing so as they drove off - that made me suspicious.
If they were up to no good I expect they were either looking for something to nick or possibly for another site if they're moved from Greenham.
Travellers are a huge problem in Ireland itself - much more so than here. If I saw you taking my picture, I would also ask you why. You raised the suspicion by using a camera on them, not the fact that they responded. Too many ifs and buts
