QUOTE (Andy Capp @ May 14 2011, 10:54 AM) I'm not sure that the best name for a car park to put on signposts is 'Library'; do you? Name change for town centre car parks?Especially if the new administration closes the libraries soon as per speculations.

QUOTE (pinkfluffyclouds @ May 16 2011, 11:07 AM) Surely all it needs to say is CAR PARK !!!!! that is all that matters if you are savvy and are visiting a town for the first time then surely you will have checked out the closest car park to where you want to go - and it's not like Newbury is a very large town is it and most car parks are close to everything anyway.... If you are savvy you will have checked online to find which park is cheaper, especially if you are planning to spend some time in town. It then helps a lot to have guidance toward individual car parks by name. As all the signs will surely have the big P for parking symbol anyway, writing CAR PARK would be superfluous. Library seems a reasonable name - it describes where it is, it helps those coming to an event at the library to find the place. However, as they are planning to get rid of the entire park in the near future, is there any real point in spending cash on new signage for no good reason?

QUOTE (Turin Machine @ May 17 2011, 10:14 AM) And I bet the whole thing had to go through a consultative process, at our expense.
You couldn't make it up ! I think you just did!

Such things are a bit like deciding where to put a path across grass.......... Wait to see where the people walk, then put the path there (or, if a council, somewhere else).

If everyone's house was called HOUSE this would prove a bit of a problem. Now I'm getting confused. NWNREADER was agreeing with you that making the address of someone's house HOUSE was not a good idea, but calling a car park CAR PARK didn't really matter because he doesn't post letters to it. Or perhaps he was being too subtle for you there.

Or perhaps he was being too subtle for you there. I was pointing out that an address is used for far more than just posting letters. Websites such as Google Maps for instance, which can be used for planning one's route. I also think that it would be hard for the public to find out and the council to enforce the tariffs at a particular location, as these vary from car park to car park. For this reason calling all the car parks in Newbury, CAR PARK seems like a bad idea to me. Back to the original post. it seems to highlight it may be a slow news week in Newbury.

Back to the original post. it seems to highlight it may be a slow news week in Newbury. You confuse 2 issues. Naming a car park for enforcement is an interesting reason, but at the car park pay location it is ok to have a plate saying what the name of the car park is. In Westminster there is just a number. A sign giving direction can just say "Car Park', because (I suspect) the majority only want to know where they can park The cost of the signage would be phenomenal, but maybe that is of no concern when new signs are making the highways engineers salivate
