Does anybody know why, when choosing to knock a whole in Northbrook street, they selected some of the oldest and most historic shop fronts? About 3 door down are some classic 70's buildings that they could have demolised instead.

Its a crime that classic buildings that have lasted 100+ years have to make way for a development that will probably last only 50.

I was told it wasn't a case of picking those particular building... it was just a case of the most convenient place. Whatever they do it will never be the same again.

If you read the story about this on Newbury Today it explains that the wrecking ball method of demolishing the buildings has not been employed in this instance to protect the listed buildings either side of those being taken down (by hand).

Last 50 years?

We'll be lucky if it's finished in 50 years.

It is a pity they are making such a mess of Newbury now.No wonder shoppers are going elsewhere.I know there has to be progress but Newbury is just being killed and a lot of the hasbeen regulars will not bother to go there again sad.gif

The trouble is if they start going else where when it is all finished they might not come back.

What stopped them keeping the frontage? seen this done in other towns and it would have looked a lot more in keeping with the rest of the street. What is the betting it was down to the council and a brown envelope was involved!

Admin - we understand that they are keeping the frontages of the building either side of the new opening.

The betting?

Very very slim I'd say.

Be careful of what you suggest Gumbo. I'm no lawyer but that seems highly unlikely and suggesting it could be illegal.

OK Gumbo I'll "get off the fence".

I think your suggestion that the local council took bribes on this issue are odorous nonsense.

They've kept the front of at least one shop, how can you not have noticed?

The few shoppers that may have gone elsewhere are doing so because it may be easier for them to do so at the moment. When it becomes easier for them to shop in Newbury again no doubt they'll be back. If they haven't developed any local loyalty for Newbury they're hardly likely to develop it for somewhere else in the short space of time the many improvements are being made.

Richard it will all depend on what type of shops this new development attracts. If it is a Kennet Shopping clone then it will attract no more people to the town.

The shops that have gone would have fallen down by themselves. They were not maintained - the old sports shop was flooded several times because of the bad roof if you remember.
The new development is going to be a clone of the KC - the 'anchor' store is Debenhams which will move from the KC to take 'pride of place' at Parkway.

If you read the email you got from the forum(well I did), they will no longer moderate posts before they are posted, they will be moderated after posting

I totally agree - it is little short of criminal.

The excuse is that they wanted the new street (East Street) to open up opposite West Street - no doubt they want to make sure the cold easterly winds cn blow through unobstructed. They will then get another contract in a few years to design the roof and entrances to the Parkway shopping centre (as happened in Basingstoke and Andover).

So what high quality retailer do we think Kennet Shopping will replace Debenhams with?
