I was talking to a pal about Thatcher and how she managed to keep people happy by doing what she said, even if it was unpopular. It led to a discussion about how bad they are now, but I wondered, are they all that bad? Is it just that we have more access to information than ever before and are able to check things so much quicker?

Boris Johnson is a great example of an out and out liar, who seems to get away with it, and in some cases I believe people like him for it!

But the tory leadership race kind of exposes them all as career politicians who will do anything and say anything to the crowd at the time to get a cheer. I am all up for people changing their minds, but to do it and deny your original opinion seems to be a tactic employed by the majority of our MP's these days.

Is there a good politician left or do we just vote for the least offensive people?

The short answer is no. The nature of the beast dictates that they need to be duplicitous in approach and slippery in retreat. What sets BJ apart is that he makes it up as he goes along irrespective of what he may or may not have said/meant a week ago and for some reason the public, or an element of it, likes this. To put in context, Borris just grins off any reference to his past perfidiousness whereas Gove, (The two front runners), wriggles embarrassingly in front of the press on the cocaine issue. To broaden the question I do not remember the libs howling from the rooftops in '16 to stop the referendum yet here they are riding the remain train for no other reason than political expediency while labour are as out of touch with their core voters as ever before.
You speak of thatcher yet she befell to the intoxication of power which is why the party eventually sent in the axemen. Blair promised so much yet delivered so little due to his obsession to being on the world stage at the expense of the country.......Literally.
They say a country gets the government it deserves and maybe this now applies to those who seek public service because they see it as a career as opposed to a humble desire to give something back to their country. We can view social media with a disparaging glance but it is what it is and some thrive on publicity and others fall but it is down to freethinkers to sieve through what is relevant.
The member for the "18th century" Rees-Mogg strikes me as being honest but some of his ideas are so alien to a progressive country that he is precluded from the top job.......Unless of course we vote for him. rolleyes.gif

I think that's a pretty accurate and fair assessment, the job by it's very nature requires a certain ability to warp the fabric of honesty and steadfastness. Having said that I once had a long chat with Edward Heath down in Lymington and he came across as a nice guy, and I wonder sometimes what the face of politics would be like today had John Smith survived.
