Cameron threw away the opportunity to do anything about the BBC to try and buy the referendum. We've created a monster and keep just keep feeding it.

She's still on 200k a year and the question she asked was an embarrassment. She said she was speaking on behalf of the uk. Its up to Prime Minister May to speak on behalf of the UK. Not some overpaid ❄ liberal lefty.

Actually, it's really a management issue. The words she used were incorrect and there should be internal mechanisims for correcting this. We do have a significant and growing problem, excaserbated no doubt by the financial rewards, where news announcers see themselves as celebrities; newsworthy in their own right. They aren't generally even reporters; just performing heads.

Our way of politics today means politicians actually court these people; which gives them a wholly inaccurate view of their own importance. Thus in a self perpetuating oligarchy such as the BBC, we end up with a self appointed squad of people who honestly do believe they 'represent the nation'.

Our fault, we should have clipped the BBC when we had the opportunity - we reap what we sow!

Isn't the same true of Peston on ITV, or Boulton on Sky?

I'm not sure muzzling public service news broadcasting would really resolve this, or if it's even an issue.

It would please the likes of Rupert Murdoch and the small number of people who control our traditional media though.

And where in that article does it say how much she earns?

In this digital age surely the BBC should be a subscription channel. Then you would have a choice. Its a dinosuar that pays over the odds for people like her. Same for Linekar.

I've nowhere suggested muzzling public service broadcasting. Just two things are needed. First, a professional news service with integrity is needed, rather than the showbiz model we have now. Mind, we'd need integrity in our politicians to get that. Ironic you mentioned Robert Peston, he would have been of no interest to the Murdoch circus unless he'd been able to build his showbiz persona at the BBC. Second, breaking up the BBC does not mean suppression. There is absolutely no reason why we can't have 'more than one' public service media delivery organisation. Indeed, even following the original intent with a regional one.

Again, the Murdoch empire was built with the conviviance of our politicians. They have had ample opportunity to stop it growing to its present size, but again, short term political expediency trumps all.

Quite right. As she hails from Sturgeon land, transfer her there, along with
fellow hard left (rich) presenter Kirsty Wark.

I'm sure BBC Scotland would welcome them, along with Sturgeon; hopefully BBC Scot/Sturgeon TV has somewhat less
inflated salary levels.

The licence fee guarantees we have at least one MSM voice independent from moguls like Murdoch.

These days. especially in the post-fact news area. that's important.

Yes, as independent as a Newbury Town Council disciplinary enquiry. Listen to day time Radio 4, the home of 'post-fact' information.

I'd suggest the best evidence that they are not the voice of the nation is that they hadn't picked up the majority view on Brexit or the dissatisfaction of vast swathes of people across the Country. I'm not sure they've even learned any lessons; why for instance are Messrs Clegg and Ashdown dug out to offer unwanted advice so often?

Are you suggesting the BBC is controlled by Murdoch or one of the other international media barons?

As for the mood of a nation, http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/eu-referendum-nigel-farage-remain-edge-it-brexit-ukip-a7098526.html, he thought Remain would win.

Of course not, I haven't even implied that. I must admit, though, I do find it rather weird that our Government is so worried about one old man; it not make you wonder why? This country is still an aristocracy, who do you think appoints the Governors?

So, then, Mr Farage actually proves the point. The establishment writ large didn't predict the result, so the BBC certainly can't claim to 'speak for the nation' - it's got no idea what the nation thinks!

Yes, and he'd be perfectly entitled to do so, just as those who campaign against leaving are doing.

That's the whole point of democracy, you can still campaign for what you believe in even if you lost a vote, and you can change your mind about things.

If the popular vote would give a different result you'd have some justification for a rerun - but our political system means the rerun would probably have the same result. We had the chance to change it but . . .

A Corbyn and Farron alliance. Unlike the liberal luvvies who said they would leave the Country on brexit and then didn't I would if that happened. And also most of the people that pay the tax bill.... Hows Bob Geldof, Lilly Allen, Ewan Mcreggor etc getting on with all the refugees they have taken in to the homes they live in? Israel is in breach of UN resolutions. I'm guessing that's the reason some countries ban their citizens. If it was any other country, we'd ban them.
