While there have been a few things for 'Annoyed of Newbury' to complain of in terms of the councils, the latest story in the News section did get my cynic's juices flowing: Delays to hydrogeological survey outcome results in funding bid postponement

  • Six months ago, the survey was due to take one month. Seems like a 'big' underestimate!
  • This has now delayed the bid for Lottery funding (see last bullet).
  • Apparently, the water extraction work have ceased, and ground water levels are 'returning to normal'. This sounds a bit of a strange thing to happen - considering the concern with the water table level in the first place, and the next bullet point.
  • Apparently, the football pitch that was deemed unsafe to play on due to subsidence and poor surface is now passed safe and is ready.
  • The skate park sits 'slightly further north' than the existing skating facility. Apparently this was to protect trees. Hmm, I'm now having doubts in the veracity of this opinion, especially taking into account the next bullet point.
  • "Both structures, having moved north, will free up space for the pavilion, should the project eventually go ahead". I wonder if the second bullet point has anything to do with the apparent 'delay' in the decision?

With issues like the above, and things like the CCTV 'delay', I think the Tory efficiency and prudence myth has been burst.

Isn't the hacks motto 'Never let the truth get in the way of a good story'?

I think the councils motto might be: never let the truth get in the way of what we want to do.

Could be. But political types know best, so shouldn't we let them?

You could be right. After all, the vast majority of constituents polled, thought that the market place improvements we see an upward change in fortune for the market. Although I doubt that the full project plan and cost was explained on the questionnaire.

As I have always said, though, I think the Parkway project is a grotesque use of public resources.

Depends on how you ask the questions.

A midweek market just does not fit in with modern life, but that is another thread.

Why not? Given that half the adult population is retired, or unemployed a mid week market is a good idea.
