I thought this was a bit off:

http://www.newburytoday.co.uk/news/home/19...ury-remark.html

Richard Deal further down the article talks about how Newbury isn't business friendly. I thought that rather ironic. If you've ever had dealings with him you'll know what I mean.

Business friendly is a weasel phrase only used by estate agents, quite meaningless. Newbury isn't deviating from its long term vision; to be the high end commuter / retirement suburb for West London. Hence being a spur terminal on the electric railway project, having a new 'high end' retail centre together with the decent pubs and restaurants around. With its proximity to pleasant open country and the unspoilt canal; it should end up quite nice, in the truest sense of that word. So don't worry, we really don't need big corporations and the like.

Dodgy things in Newbury.... I'll start..

Newbury Train Station. Collects water and sewage every time we have a bit of rain.

Pound Street area. Drunks and druggies everywhere.

Anyone else got any?

I haven't particularly noticed a problem there to be honest.

Well if a "copper' says something then it must be true.

The flooding at the station is a solvable problem which will doubtless be covered as the developments supporting the end vision move on. It will make little difference anyway. As to the 'drink and drugs' issue, we are simply seeing the tail of a national problem. Again, fixable, but it occurs everywhere. If you take the time to look round other towns when you visit, particularly those in the UK's previously industrial belt, its far, far worse.

Another sign that we are heading for dormitory status is the lack of investment in arterial roads either locally or to other motorway hubs and commercial centres. Notably the M3 and Basingstoke. Similarly, our technical college shows no signs of becoming any more than a 6th form extension and an evening class centre.

Again, nothing wrong with this, its easy and inexpensive to deliver and administer and will be quite pleasant.

The railway station has always flooded in heavy rain and always will.
I think it's to do with gravity and that fact that water always seems to flow downhill.
I dispute the "bit of rain" comment.
The amount we had during Thursday night was exceptional.
It's the reason why the very expensive gateline on platform 1 has not worked (but is still staffed (occasionally)) for about 2 1/2 years!!

The flooding at Newbury station appears on the south side, so may miss any help from the new freebie development. The flooding appears to be a drainage problem which also effects the Pound St/Bart St junction.

Well the Kennet Centre seems to be emptying out rapidly.
A mere shadow of it's former self.
The introduction of the cinema doesn't seem to have changed it's fortunes.

I don't think flooding in those two places can be solved without in-situ pumps. But then where do you pump the water to? In the case of Pound Street, maybe into the railway cutting by the Bart Street bridge where it has more room to disperse.

(Just noticed where I am posting this, and wondering how a thread about Newbury business has turned into a discussion about flooding.)

The quote come from: "Ute Bockstegers made the comments in front of more than 200 people at a Thames Valley Property Forum meeting held to discuss what the region can do to make itself more attractive to employers."

Flooding would be one item to put people off, maybe?

With traditional retail in decline the Kennet Centre has a serious problem. What's the point anymore? The shopping centre is essentially the other side of the bridge, leaving Bartholomew Street as somewhere for very small niche local traders and the old Market Place simply as a place for eating and the odd outdoor entertainment. A new use needs to be found. It would make an ideal college, or even an office; although the need for both locally is negligible. What about something radically different; a modern first rate opera house? Not sure if we'd want culture in Newbury though!
