Trivial I know - but very irritating .....

For marketing purposes Marco Pierre White seems to have "relocated" The Carnarvon Arms from Whitway, Burghclere to Highclere - and the NWN seem to have gone along with it in their reports. Shame they couldn't stick to the facts rather than join in with massaging his ego.

Never been impressed with Mark Peter White anyway. Always looks like he needs a **** good wash, shave and hair cut. Far eclipsed by he one-time student, Gordon Ramsay.

I was trying to work out what word that was that the Americans think is a swear word. I guess it's that dreadful one beginning with d.

(Note to mods: about time you edited your bad word list to take out the silly non-words, like d--mn and h-ll)

It is in the parliamentary constituency of Newbury, but not in the town, ward or parish of Newbury.

Are you saying that Greenham is not a district of Newbury?? Like Wash Common, or Turnpike?

Newbury and Greenham are separate parishes (there isn't a 'Newbury' ward).

Greenham was always a hamlet/village in it's own right. Turnpike is an estate and Wash Common (I believe) was only ever a locality. Wash Water was a hamlet, as was Enborne etc.....

Isn't pedantry fun?

Greenham is its own Parish.

Wash Common and Turnpike aren't Parishes and there's no Ward called Newbury.

Now would be a good time for Wash Common to secede from Newbury civil parish. As a substantial suburban community in its own right with its own distinct history, character, and priorities it is already poorly served by the out-of-touch behemoth that is the Town Council. A nice little parish council with a part-time clerk working out of the Sandleford Country Park office would do us nicely.

Forgive my ignorance, but I am not sure what a "ward" is.

Forgive my ignorance, but I am not sure what a "ward" is.

A ward is an optional division of an electoral constituency, so if the constituency is divided into wards you can only vote for councillors standing in that ward. Small parish councils don't have wards so you can vote for any of the candidates, but larger parishes have wards and as the parish grows the wards can be subdivided the boundaries moved. I'm pretty sure that all borough, county and unitary authroities are divided into wards.

A ward is just an electoral division, it isn't an administrative division, councillors don't just have a duty to their ward, they have a duty to the constituency as a whole, though it's not uncommon to hear parish councillors getting precious about "their" wards.

Are you challenging the territorial sovereignty of the Falkland ward? 2,000 council-tax-paying households and a £500k country park spending pretext is quite an attractive natural resource, I can imagine a beleaguered Town Council desperate to draw attention away from its fumbled management of the Town's Jewel would be glad of the opportunity to send a Task Force south into the wilds of the Wash Common to assert it's ownership against the spurious claims of the Greenham Junta - I'm sure you just drew that boundary on the map with a crayon.
