Fancy a forum meet? I'm thinking we could meet up at the Hog's Head and maybe drink a toast to the rising bollards. Any takers? Feel free to PM me if you prefer.

Simon, This has been tried before..........wasn't successful. sad.gif

Posted by: Timbo Aug 30 2012, 09:13 PM

Why was it not successful?
I'd go.

Anyway it never happened.

I'd probably go - there would be no need to disclose your forum name if you arrived and didn't want to, you could still go be sociable and remain anonymous.

Posted by: On the edge Aug 31 2012, 11:46 AM

Worth a go!

Posted by: dannyboy Aug 31 2012, 12:34 PM

Didn't Mr Garvie also try & organise a 'meet'?

Posted by: Strafin Aug 31 2012, 01:33 PM

Yes but he called it a rally, and wanted us all to wear red rosettes.

Still to be decided.

How about Monday 17 September, 7.30 pm at the Hoggs Head? (cask ales £1.95 on a Monday).

How about everyone puts £5 into the pot and anything left after two rounds we give to Help for Heros or something? Would that work?

I'm suggesting the Hoggs Head so that we really can pop out and ceremonially toast the bollards.

Might be nice to get some "The Great Newt of Orme" comemmorative t-shirts too. Anyone good with artwork?

Posted by: Timbo Aug 31 2012, 10:10 PM

Sounds good to me Simon. *wink*. smile.gif
I hope they sell something Non-alcoholic. As I do not drink that type of beverage!

Problem I worry about is, how many people on here would actually show up.... I have a feeling most of those who shout the loudest on here, in real life would be quite the wilting flower. Not talking about being violent or anything, I just mean, they are quite outspoken on the forum... Doubt they would say it in RL.

Simon, how about updating the top of the thread with the location, time and date, and a list of attending members. smile.gif

Perhaps Nothing Much could come along and we could while away the evening listening to his musings?
After all, he is popular with many on here! biggrin.gif

CE could hold you enthralled for hours on his life in PNG and in later life his dealings with the "luvvies" but beware his flounce if upset.

I think the bigger issue isn't the timid ones, but the ones that are not.

Too kind Biker After all, he is popular with many on here! & Northender.
Sadly I am really too far off the planet for such things of an evening. Lunchtimes....

Any way after the thread about motors and stamps I have booked in for a snake oil change outside Norwich.
I know it is brake fluid but I thought it amusing. So I have to travel on Monday16th to get there early on Tuesday,
They also give the car a thorough test drive to check for strange rattles and a sort of pre-mot check as well.
They drive me over to a huge retail park so I can look at things I don't need.

Did I tell you about Frank Oz and his family or was it John Huston. I hope the gathering works.

Oh well I may as well get my moneysworth today, I am sure most are doing something useful.

We used to transport an aged cat to Norfolk about 15 years ago.We are also blessed with many ordinary newts.
There are almost invisible gaps between the floor and skirting boards.
One evening we were entranced by a tiny head making it's way through. very slowly.
The cat roused itself from in front of the fire. Saw the newt and ate it," That wasn't very nice we said".

I am sure Aesop would have had a word to say on the subject.

Never got the hang of smoking anything.
Absinthe? I am no impressionist. No I am a simple gent with a fondness for Fullers.
It might be fun but it would mean an overnight stop. At my age I am not allowed out by matron after dark.

Come on ce you might enjoy the punishment!! (Sorry couldn't resist)

Aw shucks. Talk about arm twisting. Strangely enough On the Edge I was thinking last night
about joining and taking the punishment on the chin. Late night thoughts are best left till the morning.

So I will turn up. I know the pub of old.I had been planning a visit down memory lane.
So this seems a good chance to combine a mooch around south of Newbury. Old haunts.
Lunch at the Dundas Arms. A stroll down the glamour of Parkway. At least I will know what you are all talking about.
And later some new faces. Could be fun.

Who needs brakes anyway. I will PM Simon Kirby my e-mail and mobile just in case. He seems to be head honcho.

Posted by: NORTHENDER Sep 2 2012, 04:34 PM

I think you should all dress up as panto dames rather than the usual newspaper under the arm and a pink carnation to recognise each other.

Timbo , don't get too excited.
I tried to downsize the old smoker,
some years ago and the chap said don't even think about it. It is still a far better car.Than these 3 series.
Not bad for an 8 year old beast. I suppose I should remove the chainsaw from the boot.

I hope all goes according to plan for 17th Sept. I have just booked in at The Chequers .
An old family haunt once, long ago. Close enough for a totter back.

Sorry about Max Bygraves. I Spent a year working with him. A year on his "singalongamax" stage show.
Hugely popular and a nice chap as well. Packed houses twice a night. (That is a side diversion.)

Posted by: Nothing Much Sep 4 2012, 11:13 AM

There was a pub at the north end of Market Place, overlooking the canal and wrongly assumed that was it. Near Benyon's .
We played John Kongas "tokaloshe Man" on the juke box.

So the Hogg's Head must be the old Catherin Wheel. near the Corn Exchange. Any way I have 2 weeks to find out.

Thanks for putting me right dannyboy. I would have found it in the end.

And jayjay I have a spare box of BP tablets if you do turn up!

Hoggs Head is what was the old auction rooms. Next door to the pub overlooking the river, which is the 'Old Wagon & Horses'.

Catherine Wheel is now the 'Jack O Newbury'

debating society online. I am a pushover.
I ended up debating for the other side.Simon K put a stop to that and swapped me round!

I wonder if any thought has been given to the other forum. They seem nice but a bit alone.

Moving on. Yes I leave all that to French government ministers of state.Penelope.

I am a neighbour of a lady my age. We have known each other for 35 years.
Her daughter is part of mine's wedding later in the year.Maybe Maid of Honour?
Anyway they are all off to Brighton this weekend.

We both held funerals within months of each other. We went out for dinner, theatre visits, art galleries.
National Trust days out over the years that have passed. So after a slightly tipsy lunch with big bro
I asked if she would be interested in a closer friendship. "NON"

So we remain as copin et copine..... buddies. And everything above goes on as normal.
Perhaps friends are better.

Simon you beat me. I thought I would be the first to post. PC was on standby, about to shut down.

A good meet - pity a few more couldn't make it. And yes, London Pride was always my favourite tipple when available. We really should have found a way to turn off those TV walls...

Yes, CE was there with a few others. I walked up to the only table with several "mature gentlemen" sitting around it and said I was looking for some people I had not met before. So I had found them. None of them owned up to being Penelope, though.

I probably would have posted a bit earlier, but my cousin phoned me as I was walking back to the car park. We had a chat for 20 minutes sitting in the car until I said I had 2 pints of beer looking for the way out and we said our goodbyes. smile.gif

Yes, that has always been my self-imposed limit. Do you want to come and breathalyze me?

I see that http://www.80mg.org.uk/guide.html agrees with me:
QUOTE
Of course, everyone knows that the law lays down a limit, not a prohibition, and that a certain amount of alcohol can be consumed without taking drivers outside the law. This is expressed in the popular wisdom that the limit equals two pints. This can be misleading, but contains some truth. Broadly speaking, if a man of average weight consumes two pints of ordinary strength beer of 4% ABV or less, it is extremely unlikely to take him above the 80 mg legal limit, and in reality will probably lead to a maximum BAC of no higher than 60 mg.

I thought you only lived 'up the road'?

IF I am to drink and drive, I tend to drink no-more than 2 shandies, but it was so long ago, I can't remember the last time the situation arose. The options for 'teetotallers' or 'des-drives' in pubs is usually poor I find.

Well, if you are really that interested, I don't live too far from the town centre, it's true, but I have a dodgy knee at the moment which makes it painful to walk any distance. Believe me, you don't realise how far you walk normally until you can't do it.

And in case you are concerned (though my comment expressed in my earlier post still applies), if I am driving any distance, then I will drink only orange juice and lemonade. When I was flying, the rule was zero alcohol for twelve hours previously.

This conversation is now getting boring.

Posted by: Nothing Much Sep 18 2012, 02:28 PM

Yes CE did make it.NORTHENDER and is now safely back home.

I did my planned mooch round south of Newbury including a canal side pint at the Dundas Arms in Kintbury.
Then up to Combe Gibbet. About 600 ft up. terrific views and then slowly back down.

I never realised how reckless we were as kids on bikes. Brother had Sturmey Archers ..I had to walk up.
And then downhill for a few miles at stupid speed.

It was a terrific evening and no harsh words were spoken about anyone there or even not there.

I went north through Bagnor and noted the Blackbird had been spruced up. Boxford, Winterbourne, Chievely and the M4.
Is it just me or have country lanes become smaller!

Thanks to Simon , and to others who made it. Best wishes ce.

I agree, but I wasn't that interested; just an observation. Such is the stigma that surrounds drinking and driving, any amount is frowned upon these days.

Posted by: Nothing Much Sep 18 2012, 03:23 PM

Ok Flying is pretty regulated but does lead to some charges these days.
However Berlin Airlift convoys and flying on 14 hour trips in WW2 did lead to Benzedrine use. The poor Tommy in the trenches just had a fag and a swig of rum . OK boys over the top....

I do stick to the 12 hour rule if I am driving far or fast.
And as most of the Newts will agree there is not much room for more. I couldn't even manage Simon Kirby's Chips.

Getting slightly back on topic about Newbury and it's pleasures. One day it was the Odeon where I saw the Sound Of Music.
Walking down Northbrook street. My plan was to explore Parkway
I looked left and saw a big Debenham's sign. My daughter worked for Debs as a buyer and now does the same for Habitat.
I took a deep breath. I am going to explore the alleys on the other side of the road, which I thoroughly enjoyed.
Nothing I needed to buy . but just an explore. Places some 50 years ago I would not have noticed even.

I was usually in the back of the House Of Toomer, where they had a sound studio for buying kit
and booths for listening to LPs

And to Nothing Much: Wormingford, the place in Norfolk you hadn't heard of is because it's in Essex. The gliding club I meant is Tibenham. Sold a glider to someone from the former and bought one from a syndicate at the latter. smile.gif Hence the confusion. It's all East Anglia anyway...

You see! We are not gone... Just had a lie in.

The Glider Club from Tibbenham dropped in a couple of small planes to join a vintage car display on the green.
In mid Norfolk.
My son got quite interested and was given a voucher for a trial. It was a long trip there and by the time we arrived
the easterlies were too strong. So no flying that day. So we had a look around and drove home.

By which time he had lost interest and asked if we could fix him up with driving lessons.

For those interested, there are stone or granite memorials on lost airfield sites all over East Anglia.
Tibbenham hosted Liberators,from 1943.
Maybe Timbo has woken up.

Well as you know I was born a middle east little critter and I don't venture out of my well appointed hole till warmer weather.
Plenty to keep me busy... eating moths off the flying carpet, polishing the genii's home, checking Saladin for spelling mistakes.

Actually I had a lap dancing accident on a #73 bus. They were bendy but are now super duper hybrid. I was using a structural pole to slip into a seat when the engine took over and the bus moves from 5mph to 20 and swings into lane. I ended up miles from where I planned.Fortunately the lady I sat on was bigger than me.

I managed to shred my chinos, socks and ankle. I have to have the wound dressed every other day.
I have several floors to negotiate to get here so only do it a few times a day, without Paracetemol I would go mad.
Much the same effect as daytime TV has.

Hope a few new members enjoy the fun. I do always log on but there is a limit as to what you can say about a silly mishap.

Yeah, actually meeting people at the pub or some place OUTSIDE where there is AIR and WIND and SUNSHINE as opposed to sitting angrily on computers smashing keyboards to pieces..

Why would anyone enjoy that.

I don't believe that's true. I would agree when forumistas know each other then that helps engender the usual empathy and respect for the other members that is not always there in an anonymous forum. So if meeting each other makes us more civil and understanding then sure, that will change the character of the forum, but there's no evidence that a less hostile vibe will kill a forum, quite the opposite really.

Anyhoo User, you'd be very welcome if you wanted to come along, and no one's going to ask you who you are if you want to turn up anonymously.

Posted by: motormad Feb 10 2013, 11:52 AM

Unfortunately for me it's hardly difficult to guess who I would be, the only one without grey hair.
On another forum I use (car forum) we are stronger because we all know each other in RL from meets and shows and events.

What I mean is, when people who post on general chat forums who have nothing in common as a group other than that they live in the same area, meet off-line, it invariably changes the social dynamic of the forum.

This is because cliques may be formed and communication via other methods initiated, giving those unable or not wishing to participate in what's referred to as a "back channel" (fnar) a different user experience.

Of course, nitwits who make flippant remarks because they don't understand what's being said also contribute to a forum's demise. wink.gif

Perhaps a visit to the Swan at Thatcham. Then the wise old Newts could solve the railway issue at the same time. cool.gif ce

...by taking the train?

Posted by: Nothing Much Sep 6 2013, 03:57 PM

That had crossed my mind......

Went to the Swan one lunch time and wasn't impressed wit the food.

Posted by: Nothing Much Sep 6 2013, 06:04 PM

During my streetview visit there was a police van parked up by the front door.
I am sure that it was just paying a courtesy visit.

Any news of a date / venue?

Posted by: Simon Kirby Oct 1 2013, 03:08 PM

How would Monday 14th October be?

How about the Furze Bush out beyound Wash Water?

Posted by: motormad Oct 1 2013, 03:11 PM

I'm fine with whatever.
Bit out of the sticks though...

Posted by: On the edge Oct 1 2013, 03:17 PM

I can go with that. If necessary, quite happy if venue changes!

Posted by: Simon Kirby Oct 1 2013, 03:27 PM

Rather then me trying to guess, will a few of you suggest where you'd like to meet?

Posted by: Claude Oct 1 2013, 03:31 PM

If this is an open invitation I'd quite like to come along and put faces to (user)names, if that's ok?

The Swan in Newbury? The same place in Kintbury?

Basically anywhere that's got parking and not a thousand miles into the Rainforest! laugh.gif

As the caravan has been to Kintbury lately, would go with the Swan Newbury. Assuming that's the one near the dump roundabout...

Posted by: Nothing Much Oct 1 2013, 03:59 PM

I guess that's the one where I turned my mini van over in the hedge at the bottom of the hill up to Newtown Common.

See if I can do better this time. cool.gif

Posted by: motormad Oct 1 2013, 04:00 PM

Sorry, my mistake. I meant the Swan in Thatcham. By the Train Station.
However the one at Newbury at the bottom of the dump hill would be fine too! laugh.gif

Nice place. I had been there a few times in the past. There is a perfectly good car park for motormad.
I did indeed use the facilities there on the morning after the recent Dundas event... very nice too laugh.gif

Don't think I'll bother, since it seems I can't even have a pint without being labelled a minor criminal by the other contributors here.

I'd offer lifts but no-one is interested in my collapsed suspension.

Posted by: blackdog Oct 1 2013, 11:58 PM

Surely the only Swan in Newbury is the one in London Road?

Posted by: On the edge Oct 2 2013, 06:27 AM

Yes, you are probably right! Shows how much notice I take of local pubs. Simply to avoid confusion shall we keep it at the Swan, Newtown?

No there are 3 swans. (And they all belong to the queen).
One's near the Thatcham trainstation.
One is on London Road close to the BP
And the other is on the road to Tot Hill ( that's where we are planning on meeting I guess! )

I hope the meet is/was good.
Just got back from A&E where I apparently have an infection causing my symptoms.

Simon really sorry again I feel really bad, you know I enjoy these meets plus not being able to give you a lift.
I'll arrange a time with you that suits you and we can go out and have a drink or something to eat and it'll be on me wink.gif (as in, I'll be paying, not actually "off me")
