Avenue RIP, Another venue bites the dust Options

Not quite, one of the partners from the pig and paper went on to The Avenue, one went elsewhere, and as far as I know that's it!

There's at least one member of the Avenue partnership who has been involved with at least three ventures in that neck of the woods, all of which went the same way in a similar timeframe. I reckon its time they realised that they're obviously not destined to be a bar owner.
For me, alarm bells would certainly be ringing after the second time if not the first.

I don't believe there is a proper Chinese restaurant in Newbury any more, is there? I think the nearest are in Thatcham now (but well worth the trip). Whereas Newbury has a surfeit of Indian restaurants and I think I read there were plans to open yet another one.

I agree with you about the restaurants although Chenz is not bad.

The establishment I was referring to is in fact a takeaway so maybe Bloggo is right in thinking of my best health interests!

A non-restaurant owning Chinese friend of ours, who lives in China part of the year, rates only the Jade Cottage & Szechuan Inn.

The simple issue of the closure of local pubs is that we have reached saturation point in Newbury in terms of supply, the same applies to restaurants in the town. Greedy landlords demand high rents and making it hard for new ventures to sustain their overheads. The other obvious factor in the closure of local pubs is the price point for a pint. I am very pleased that the likes of Weatherspoons have come into town, I hope their presence will create a downward pressure re Ton the price of a pint for ordinary working people. Unlike LSB who serve perectly good beer at eye watering prices.

So with over supply and some stiff competition we may see one or two other pubs going, not good for choice perhaps but this is a market economy. I rather suspect that my argument regarding over supply will be applied to the Park Way development, too much retail space = over supply = shop closures and empty space and a dead town with decreasing footfall. Not rocket science.

The only ones I can think of that aren't open are The Hatchet and the KC which are temporarily closed.
