Might it have been thunder? Funnily enough I heard a boom when I was at Penwood this aft and assumed that was thunder, but maybe it wasn't.

Hundreds did, apparently, and the lucky (?) people in Bath also got a rather impressive flying display.......

QUOTE
it was from one of two RAF Typhoons that had been launched following an emergency call from a helicopter.

The helicopter had apparently mistakenly transmitted on a frequency used to warn that it was being hijacked. I'm guessing that the "help" the Typhoons can offer in that particular situation is more or less along the lines of stopping the helicopter doing a 9/11, so it's a good thing the helicopter pilot realised her error in time.

You know, had there actually been an emergency, we have these jet fighters capable of mach 2 but they will never do that because it would upset dorris and her cats.
This country could and should be a lot greater than it is but the nanny state always get in the way. People get all shocked "oh my god I thought my house was falling down" well obviously you live a very secluded life.

There is a bit of history to Sonic Booms. They used to be part of an air display in the early 1950s
to demonstrate the latest in RAF hardware.

Banned over land after some nasty accidents during flight testing of the latest new jet fighter.

It can be quite scary when the USAF dogfight high in the air completely out of sight, and suddenly appear
coming straight down with full power.

Fair comment Blue. But it is hard to change the habits ,or rabbits, or hobbits, of a lifetime

Looks like Taxpayer that the noise was up a level too high.
Did you mean to double the As? Or was it just a Scionic Bomb?
In jest of course. Too late at night for me to be serious.

I remember being scared silly by a Fairey Delta making the big bang, presumably en route from Boscombe to Farnborough. People didn't get wound up by things then.. Just 10 years after nights of bombs the noise of a single plane was barely worth a look up. Now it is headlines for days......

Well NWN Reader I have just sent off a book about those days. To my brother.
I think I bought it for myself as an Xmas gift.
Full of such things and a bit about jet-ex from a boys perspective. Winding up rubber bands?

James Hamilton- Patterson. "When the Empire Ruled the Skies" or something like that.
All about test flying barely flyable planes. Fairy Delta would have been one of them.

Pulse jet engines are still used and are available for model aircraft. My son-in-law use them in model doodlebug bombs.
