I am very sad to read that the bar closed last night. It was one of the only venues in town where you could enjoy DJs and live music covering many genres and feel safe in an up for it, but non-hostile environment. What a pity.

QUOTE (TallDarkAndHandsome @ Sep 23 2009, 05:03 PM) Rent and Rates in Newbury = Pub Closure. Is it just a Newbury problem though? Seem to recall reading that pub closures in this country are currently running at an astronomic rate, was 39 a week at the beginning of 2009, probably more than that now.

But booze has never been so cheap in the UK as it is now, relatively speaking - just look at some of the almost giveaway prices in the supermarkets. Do the Labour government get the credit, or the blame, for that, I wonder?

QUOTE (user23 @ Sep 23 2009, 06:18 PM) Isn't the landlord taking over the old Bar Cuba building?
I would have thought that's the reason it's closed. Well a pub chain won't generally close a particular pub just because the landlord moves on - they would normally install a temporary manager wouldn't they? Is that what used to be the old Natwest pub? if so, it's never done well has it?

Do the Labour government get the credit, or the blame, for that, I wonder? That's supermarket/off-licence booze though. Its still taxed, it's just that supermarkets loss-lead on the portion of the price that isn't the tax! Every year the Gov raised the tax on a pint by a penny or two. It's always converted into a 10p or so rise by the pub of course though.

It's not a chain. The note on the door says their lease has expired and they have decided to move on.

But that's been going on for decades, irrespective of the colour of government. What is really alarming is the increase in pub closures. Mayhaps the smoking ban has a good bit to do with that but, who can really argue against that?

I am sure in many instances the smoking ban is the final straw, but tightening belts during a recession and/or job uncertainty would also contribute.

The note on the door says their lease has expired and they have decided to move on. Was it a free house then, free from a brewery chain or pub chain or pub co? So the lease expiring was the reason for closure, not the manager moving on.

So the lease expiring was the reason for closure, not the manager moving on. I believe it was a free house, as was Eve before it. I think the manager not renewing the lease due to wanting to move on was more the case.

It was not a manager it is the owner of the business - but not the owner of the building. He is opening up in the old Bar Cuba - as Avenue. Rumour has it he is also looking at taking over the Berkshire Tavern. I can see no reason for not running the Pig & Paper as well, apart from profitability - as has been pointed out it is busy enough, so the rent seems a feasible reason for closing. Perhaps someone else will take on the lease and it will continue to be a pub.

QUOTE (Iommi @ Sep 24 2009, 01:46 PM) It's the same sort of thing that happened to The Clocky way back. And it's never recovered. I wonder if it went back to the old style Clocky, would it do better?
