So, HMV is in trouble and they have a shop in Newbury - this is local news (apparently)

But who'd be more interested to read about the dreadful trading at Christmas by our homegrown businesses?

Who like, I hear you ask...well here's 5 more empties coming up soon.

Artifax (Bart St)
Barbarellas (Cheap St)
Glynis Garden (Bart St)
Florist (opp new Travelodge)
Sarnie shop behind Jones Robinson (the hexagonal one).

Is there a link to the Bart St roadworks?
Have the green meanies won the day? Or Tesco?
Is Park Way causing big rent rises across town?
What do the latest footfall figures show?
Is the Newbury Events Manager thing working?
What does the Town Centre Partnership think?
Is online shopping killing our high street?

So many questions....but the answers are for news reporters to find out please. rolleyes.gif

Disclaimer - some of these may be relocating to cheaper premises, but they're all listed in the Newbury Business News commercial property section or via the local agent websites. You don't move premises unless there's trouble at mill.

To put it in context 40 of HMV's 285 stores are to close and 20 of I don't know how many Waterstones. HMV have said that the closures will concentrate on city conurbations where there are multiple branches - not places like Nebwury where there is only one of each.

Or unless you're doing well, then you move to larger or better premises.

Crickets is a good example of this, Regency Letting is another, Framemakers another.

Don't be too quick to declare the glass half empty.

Poor examples I'm afraid. The estate agents (which I believe were both in Cheap Street) have moved because I understand that the buildings they were in previously are being revamped and Framemakers doesn't have a branch in Newbury any more - only the same framing location as before.

They are just moving, to where Prin dry cleaners were. Practically opposite Johns Robinson.

I assume they must be doing pretty well to move into larger more modern offices though.

I don't get what you mean by "only the same framing location as before".

Thanks for that. Looks like we've managed to clear some of this up on our own.

Why would anyone buying on line bother to trek into HMV to look at real CD cases or whatever rather than pictures of them?

Because browsing in a shop is far, far easier than doing the same online.

Not in HMV it ain't, with their lack of stock (which is always a sign of things ain't good) and misplaced disk cases.

That's just your opinion. I would rather sit at home leisurely looking at what I want to buy than trek all the way into town and elbow my way through crowds of people. Especially if my intention is just to browse and not buy.

each to their own.

But I think you nailed it with - looking at what I want to buy .

Shop browsing highlights things which you never knew about & serendipitously stumble across. Very hard online. This is where retail will fall down in 5 years time when the high street shop has gone. The supermarkets have already begun the process. All we'll be buying is what the global corporates want us to buy.

When I shop online, I only go looking for something that I wish to purchase. You are exactly right that the biggest draw back of not going into a shop is that you simply miss things you don't know about. I think the high street will always remain in some capacity, just the amount of money spent will decline and further consolodation of the market is still to take place.

It would be nice to think so, but if the HMV Group can't survive then it is not good for retail which relies upon homogenous product.

Not true; you must have seen the 'people why bought this, also bought this' adverts. Also, take HMV for example, I suspect strongly that they have in the past had stock of things I would like but has been misplaced, or simply I have not seen them.
