The effects of implementing the McNulty Report are discussed elsewhere. However, there is a wider issue here and one that is probably far more damaging longer term.

McNulty's report was sponsored by the Railway Regulator and the Civil Service . under the previous government. This is what most of us would have thought the Regulator should have been doing anyway - so it begs the question, why on earth are we paying for the same thing twice?

McNulty himself has a vast airline experience (pretty useful for Railways!!) and has retired. He's 70 odd. Nothing wrong with that, but should he not be enjoying a well earned retirement? How did this job ever get commissioned in the first place is beyond me - what a fantastic waste of money!

Its also pretty clear, from the bit the press have picked up on that neither McNulty or his committee have ever used public transport to any great extent - let alone on the continent.

Here's hoping that the present government will use this to get rid of the Regulator and then start properly managing the railway.

Finally, if anyone knows where one gets these part time jobs, where all you have to do is take ages to create a report which simply states the bl****** obvious, let me know. I'd be happy to do it in half the time for a quarter of the money.

Sadly I was a younger brother of everyone at the time.... Rushtons, Ingrams, Palin. Foot. Private Eye. Peel,
Even Simon Dee.
We had a lot to live up to. We tried hard.
