Newbury Today Forum _ Random Rants _ Posting parcels

Can anybody tell me if I can post parcels at the Royal Mail delivery office next door to Thatcham station? Got rather big ones (parcels that is) and it will be difficult at little local sub post offices.

No. The clue's in the word "delivery". tongue.gif

Correct.. they don't have the facility for accepting cash or handing out stamps. Collections or deliveries only.

Two differing replies there.
Rather sarcastic from newres and contadicting that from spartacus.
Does this help?

Eh? I said you can either collect your parcel from there or they deliver from there. What they don't do is accept parcels.

So what does "Customers posting parcels and letters bearing postage stamps will now be able to drop-off items for delivery within the UK, at the Royal Mail Customer Service Point at their local Delivery Office." in the first link mean then?
I must be misreading or misunderstanding something.

I'd guess that it means that they will accept parcels for delivery as long as they have the appropriate stamps on them ie they can take parcels into the delivery system but cannot take payment for postage.

That's what I was "guessing".
So Sparty's wrong then?

OK I give in. Posted them at local sub-post office in a shop. Took about 40 minutes at the counter.

A small point. It is said that if I did the business of getting them weighed at the post office and paying the charges, I could then take them to the delivery depot myself. but if I did that I would be acting as a subcontractor to the post office (unpaid) and would also invalidate my car insurance which is only for "social, domestic and pleasure"

I'm not sure about this because you can receive notification a fee to pay on a delivery which can either be done online or in person at the depot. That would suggest that they have the facility to accept payment.

I think there's a difference between paying Postage Due and buying stamps (even assuming weighing didn't come into it).

I guess I was wrong then. I remember several years ago being in a long queue at the depot PO around Xmas waiting to collect and there was someone who was trying to send a large parcel but they were turned away -and made a fuss because they'd waited so long only to be sent away because the PO counter couldn't process or take money. Perhaps it's changed.
