A valiant attempt Biker, but we've been 'investing' in the future since privatisation. OK it's coming but a bit of effective and efficient management during those long and still continuing years would certainly have helped. Yes, we have a lot of people in this Country, but Sainsburys, Sky or even National Express, aren't complaining about having too many customers!
I agree OTE northing's perfect and things could be done much better. The same story over the history of railways. The money and effort that has been wasted in the past, mostly under BR, is astounding.
It's funny, I have a book of letters to The Times on railway issues dating back to the beginning of the last century.
On reading it, the complaints are so similar to today's. Little changes!!
I suspect that in this ever more crowded country no matter how long the trains they will always be crowded.
If a space is created it seems to be human nature to fill it whether it be railways, roads, planes etc.
However, Sainsbury's just build bigger supermarkets, Sky have no physical restrictions on number of customers, National Express just buy more coaches and crowd the roads even more.
Like I said, the logistics of providing more space on trains is far more complicated and bears no resemblance to those you quoted.
