Oh dear! So much for those with a yearning for a return to a 1950s size market. It seems WBCs plan to restore that environment by bringing the bus station back to the Wharf will herald the end of trading because the few stall holders left can't park near their pitches. Still, its a gentle way of gently letting the market pass away without too much effort and thus contributing to the bigger vision. WBC and NTC working together; joined up thinking.

Yes, brilliant!
Move the bus station a bit further away from the railway station than it already is.
Yet more joined up thinking from our leaders! laugh.gif

There's no threat to the charter market, this is just the town council seeking attention. Market traders could be allowed to park in the market square right next to their pitches, or better still they could park in the market square and move the pitches to Northbrook Street where the footfall is and where people will actually buy stuff.

If the charter market were run by an independent market operator who knew something about their craft it would actually be a credit to the town rather than the moribund embarrassment it is today and we could put the £20k or so that it currently costs the tax payer to administer the thing towards something a little more deserving.

I went to Basingstoke the other day. Bus station and railway station a few minutes walk from each other and an easily accessible car park in the middle too. The market, if there is still one there, is at the south end of the town, out of the way! tongue.gif

I must be too far removed from the target socio-economic group to fully appreciate the wonderful Newbury Market, as there's very little that would tempt me to part with any cash. One stall must have the world's supply of hoover bags in an age where everyone has bagless vacuum cleaners. What's the point??? laugh.gif laugh.gif (Probably find it's a front for some dodgy dealings and the bags are full of weed.... all happening under our noses) biggrin.gif

There is probably some truth in that; which surely underlines Simon's earlier post. Do we really think what is no more than a parish council administration has the appropriate skill to arrest the obvious decline? Let alone turn it into something that fits the Town Centre's self acclaimed vision. The worst aspect of this is that the Town Council run the market at a financial loss. So it's a pretty poor example of the Tory market forces are best mantra. I suppose if it was worth saving, the expertise in the BID would jump in.

What with the roadworks on the A339 to build the new junction into Faraday ensuring that it now takes an hour to cross Newbury, and it is predicted that this will continue when the junction is actually finished and operating, and WBC doing it's utmost to make it difficult for businesses to operate and for people cost far to much to visit Newbury plus some of the same Councillors sitting on the town council, which is surely a conflict of interest, then moaning about WBC and doing nothing to try to stop them and being totally incompetent in running a small market is it any wonder that local politicians are treated with such contempt. rolleyes.gif

Its pretty clear that local councils are imploding. Who on earth would actually want to stand anymore, save the odd political hobbiest? Thats why many councils have had to co-opt replacement members, many Councillors are double dippers, and there are a good few wives press ganged into helping. Rats don't normally swim to sinking ships.

This serious lack of political talent, significantly diluted by internecine party warfare has an obvious and corrosive effect on the morale of the full time staff. The Concillors are essentially the directors; so no matter your role there, its hardly going to be a great place to work, so only attractive to those who see the remuneration package as an end in itself. And so the spiral of decline continues.

Reform won't work, the problem is institutionalised. The only answer is abolition; have all services agency provided and managed centrally.
