Price of NWN has gone up again by another 5p.
Went up by this amount just over a year ago.
This is well above the rate of inflation.
Are we getting a better quality paper for the extra money?
My free copy from the railway station says no but others may beg to differ.
Seems like not so long ago it was 50p although I can't remember exactly when.
That's a 40% increase in what seems quite a short space of time.
Maybe if it didn't have the monopoly of news in this area it may not be quite so quick to bump up the price!!

Maybe people don't buy it in any great volume and maybe advertising space is not as lucrative either. There's a war on you know. wink.gif

Most weekly papers range from 80p to £1.25p. I don't think it's too bad, considering the product is better than other local papers (Gazette, Post etc.)

I really don't see the need for this post at all.

Biker1's point that this was the second rise way above inflation, not that he/she could no longer afford it.

No. laugh.gif

I used to get it delivered free. Not sure how that worked but I never complained. While I say I don't read tabloid press (which is true) I do read the odd local rag when there's nothing else to do; and always enjoy having a flick through the NWN.

Most magazines go up quite a lot. I used to buy Autocar magazine each week (or have a subscription) and it went from £2.20 to £2.75 in the course of a year. Evo Magazine again went up about 50p over a year. It happens. If you enjoy reading it, it doesn't matter really.

Aren't railways and publishing industries quite similar?

As in they are rarely on time and when they are, not actually very good anyway.

I'll get my coat.

In 2008, the NWN was still 40p and still had the TV guide.

Now we get no TV guide and a much higher price. The paper has many obvious shortcomings. Basic words, phrases, even local place names are spelled erroneously. I also find now, at times, the paper is very photograph heavy but light on text! Facts are also sometimes wrong or not quite right.

It is a real pity as this was a good newspaper when it was a broadsheet but quality is really falling.

I won't be buying it nearly so often now.

Very good! dry.gif
So the costs of the publishing industry are rising faster than anyone else's?
I.E. faster than the rate of inflation?
Or do they get away with it by hoping that everyone thinks like xjay?

It is only 5p. If I dropped 5p on the floor and there were people around I wouldn't even bother to pick it up.

I think we need a bit of perspective.

A 5p price rise raises £50k a year for the NWN, out of a £7m turnover.

NWN directors were paid £160k in dividends (after managing to cut overheads and increase margins), and the year end is coming up in December so it all helps.

Newspaper publishers often get shafted by rising paper costs due to cartel behaviour

But in 1995, European newsprint was $600 a tonne, in 2011 it's $500. So I don't entirely believe the rationale.

Yes, drop it, then embarrass yourself in front of others by picking it up, and putting THAT in the box as well. wink.gif

I don't think people would mind the price going up if it served all the people of Newbury, instead of just the few and the privileged.
