Weird there is no mention in the Arts section on the Newbury News website that one of the biggest comics in the country at the moment was in town at the weekend doing warm up for his forthcoming Arena tour. And even weirder that there is no news about the fact he brought a mate along to do the first half of his set and then walked off stage well before he should have finished in a massive huff (tossing his mic away after about 50 mins) telling the whole audience they could get a refund if they wanted. I'd be interested to know if the Corn Exchange is willing to honour this statement from Mr Bridges and it would also be good to hear from the Bridges' camp to understand the reason for his behaviour. Come on NWN try doing some proper journalism for once.

So did I & lot's of others, all it takes is a bit of forward planning rolleyes.gif . As for the complaints about Rip off Food Prices, it never ceases to amaze me, doesn't anyone realise Horse Burgers are around £4 wherever you go to these days. Simple answer really & its not that difficult, spend about 15 minutes the evening before & make a few sarnies, pack a slice of cake a bottle of pop & save a fortune wink.gif !!

Or go to the food tents and try to eat as many free samples as possible.

I thought parking was free? well it was where we parked (went up to Hemitage along the B4009 and followed sign posts to park).

I always enjoyed pottering round the car stands and having a good poke around the cars without the hassle of normally going in to a showroom. This time however it would appear that most car makers decided to boycot the event and I can only recall seeing stands for Volvo, Skoda and Vauxhall........not the best!

Perhaps we need a NWN reader's poll to vote for the best real cup of tea in Newbury. Would be a good boost for the papers ratings (internet search) and good for our local businesses.

Any NWN reporters willing to take it up?

I prefer a nice latte so am fairly well catered for thanks wink.gif but good luck

Why can't we have more decent tea shops selling good quality cups of tea? Apart from Tea Shop by the canal and the tax avoiding Starbucks there is nothing other than a cheap tea bag tea available. Would be good for the independents to get a foothold and show the big franchises how it's done.

Is there not a nice little cafe down Weavers walk? or one up by the clock tower?

As soon as I saw a tiny opticians, offering a very limited selection of glasses, wasn't going to do very well. There are already 4 or 5 in town that offer a varied selection of all the top brands plus being more established they already have people on their books who come for eye tests that will then shop in the store. Unless Ottica came in offering a brand that was highly desirable that none of the others were they were always doomed to fail. It isn't rocket science.

I personally think Parkway is quite a nice little shopping experience and if a few other retailers come in it will only do better. I was chatting the other week to the people who run Fat Face and they were saying how well they were doing. You chuck in a few more 'current' popular brand shops e.g. Gap, Zara or a brand associated with opening in smaller towns like Jack Wills and the footfall will increase even more.

Anybody know why Lavazza is taking forever to open their store? As with Ottica I think this one may struggle, what with all the other coffee shops in town, but then again as the other shops always seem to have queues you never know.

To address your point, the food was good. I can remember when all we had was Hog-Roast, then the Indian food came, and it's slowly grown, and all to the good. You will have to watch out that you don't become a victim of your own success though. Becoming popular can bring with it more demands, whingers (see this thread) and expenses.

Daft idea to stick the bum'n'face mob so near to the river crossing. The KOTG mob soon became, ....what's the most polite way of putting it?... Chav Central, along with all the cheap drink they bought in with them from Lidls or M and W, (or wherever they go) and the free and easy style they adopted to taking Class A and B's. It will be them, mark my words, that cause the downfall of your event if you don't get a grip before next year.

The best way to stop them would be to stop the KOTG brigade (who really have no place at a real ale festival) altogether and whos' stage noise interfered with the enjoyment of the real live music on the other side. They put on their own punch-up, sorry, Show, in Victoria park every year. Let them be happy with that. Don't let them or the Knaves and Varlets they attract drag your event down.

See you next year.

I totally agree with what you have said about the KOTG tent. Definitely isn't needed, the noise clashed too much with the main stage and alsi it attracted a more undesirable element who were bringing in their own drink.

Thanks All

Really good to know that you enjoyed yourselves. We do tend to get a lot of negative comments which we do value, but this year we have had a lot of compliments, it really does make it worthwhile, that and handing over an oversized cheque for lots of money to Naomi House.

Still a learning curve for us, we tried a couple of things this year that did not come off as we had hoped. The year we do a perfect festival is the year we pack it in.....

Space is always going to be an issue for 5000 people in Northcroft, but we have some ideas, the planning for next year started on Sunday.

I think the separate cider and ale tents worked well, but would like to heard what you think? Our problem was simply space and the size of available marquees in the area.

What did you guys think of the food this year?

Best Wishes

Tedward

Thanks for organising Tedward, I had the Paella and it was yummy and good value, can't really comment on the other food as I didn't try it but good to see a selection.

It was a good event BUT I think they only need one source of music. For me it was ruined by my ears having to suffer with two lots of music being played at once and I think unless you were right next to either source you had to put up with this. For me they should drop the KOTG tent and if they want a bit of dance music played they give them a slot on the main stage.

Then again does it really matter? excluding Northern Ireland we all live on the same piece of tiny rock, it still baffles me that in the 21st Century people are still arguing over wanting to call their own little bit something else, I guess it gives them some purpose to their existence.

Indeed. The England team sing God Save The Queen because she is the Queen of England. Yes she also happens to reign over a number of other smaller places that were conquered or won in a poker game a while back but first and foremost she is England's Queen and it is England's anthem. Maybe it would have been a lot easier if previous kings or queens had just renamed some of these colonies England but hey ho with the benefit of hindsight eh?

Sorry but if I saw a VW golf with orange wheels the last thing I would do is wave, burst out laughing would be a more appropriate response!

Thanks for the tips though, one more I would add is if it is a white out only travel if essential. Try to avoid nipping up to Tesco to do donuts!

Crap maths apart and back to the point, why are petrol prices so much more expensive in and around Newbury compared with much of the rest of the country? angry.gif

Do you ever get the feeling this question is getting ignored? Really really does annoy me. I was in Sussex at the weekend and the average price down there was £1.30 compared to the £1.35 we get stung for. Personally I would expect our local MP to be working on this on behalf of his constituents to ensure we are not being ripped off!

Install an all weather flooring the same as in most playgrounds in the UK. This is England, it tends to rain a lot, therefore a grassed area will get muddy and boggy particularly in the Autumn/ Winter months when the weather isn't warm enough to dry it out quickly. Seriously rocket science it aint!

All a shame really and as I have posted in the past a decent park with decent facilities actually attracts people in to town. Lots of families enjoy taking their kids to a nice big park and often they don't just come in for that and more often than not take a little wander around the shops and cafes.

Yup, that does appear to be it. As you say, a complete bodge job. It only has to rain for a while and the toddler's/sandpit area becomes a quagmire which takes at least a day of sunny weather before it dries up. Until then, parents have to catch their kids as they come down the slide to stop them landing in the mud. Nice.

A lot of the equipment is already wearing badly, the digger (which was the cause of several injuries) broke and had to be removed, and then there are the design classics, such as the gate to the sand pit being installed the opposite way round to current advice.

It really is a shame because it was once a very popular park. For a lovely sunny winters day I was surprised how quiet the playground was compared to the old one. The old one was well overdue replacing but what has been put in its place is a badly thought out steaming ****! oh and without a fence there is a good chance that your child may land in one of those as they come off the slide!

So is that it? is the playground now finished? because if it is it is a total bodge job by whoever did it! I took mini Gumbo there yesterday and was quite disappointed with all the puddles and mud around all the equipment. Very very unusual to have grass and mud around play equipment, normally it is some specialist flooring, this was definitely all done on the cheap!

Regular walk home from the station last night and spotted just the one scum bag stumbling along outside Peggys. He looked fairly gone and was just about holding on to a take-out coffee cup which definitely didn't contain coffee as the liquid inside was green! could have been fairy liquid I suppose and he could have been stumbling as he was so overcome with the heat........but I doubt it.

They must come out and target you specifically then, because I often walk down there, have shopped in the lighting centre for hard-to-find bulbs etc., have bought Chinese takeaways, use one of the hairdressers in Pound Street and so on, and have never had a problem.

I just don't recognise your description of the part of town you so often go on about.

You should've gone to Specsavers then. Seriously that end of town is plagued by undesirables. I seem to find myself always saying "ah it's good to be home" when I come back from holiday and drive down Bart St, as every time I spot one of Newbury's finest.

Good luck to him, although that Alley seems to be a regular hang out for Newbury's all day drinkers and substance abusers so customers during the day may be put off visiting.
