Newbury Today Forum _ Random Rants _ NWN: is it just me or......?

Posted by: GMR Jul 18 2009, 06:21 PM

Is it just me or are those ads on the side of the screen interfering with other members putting up posts etc? Whoever designed it has done a bad job. They - the ads - are taking up a quarter of the screen and over lapping into the writing area. angry.gif

Posted by: nicster09 Jul 18 2009, 07:35 PM

On my screen they are below, then with a huge blank space

It has been changing all day. I like the way they fiddle with it then jusg bugger off and leave it.

On my computer and laptop the forum is squashed up on the left with a quarter of the screen white and then the ads.... and the ads half obscure the writing area. It is really annoying.

No such problems on my Apple PC. Ads on the right quarter of the screen.

Thanks for that; maybe it affects some computers. But it is really bad on mine. I wish they leave things alone until they know what they are doing. Starting a job and then half finishing it is bad professionalism. I've even got half the writing cut off; the writing from the forum.

Odd!

Something not quite right, certainly, as on my screen I've lost a word or two on the right from GMR regarding police activity in Northbrook St today. Luckily, I'd left the scene before they arrived laugh.gif

Odd!

They've been fiddling with it all this afternoon; the ads have been in different places with even different ads. They must have said halfway through their fiddling "oh, look at the time... we'll leave it and come back Monday." Which week, month or year is anybody's guess laugh.gif

I don't have any problem. There's an add right at the bottom, but it doesn't interfere. If there is any difference, then it is likely to be browser dependant.

Posted by: JeffG Jul 18 2009, 09:28 PM

Grr! I thought it must be those poor benighted souls who use Internet Explorer. A few minutes ago it was fine in Firefox, with the ads at the bottom of the screen. So I fired up IE and sure enough got the ads on the right.

I went back to Firefox and blow me down, now the ads are on the right. with everything squashed up. No problem with losing any text, though.

Perhaps they are working on it as we speak...

I doubt they are working on it now. They were doing it this afternoon; you can tell. They were cocking everything up. laugh.gif

Yes, if anyone is reading this, don't Ctrl+F5 and flush the cache. BTW, post a complaint to the admins, I have.

I said...

Come on Admins sort the advert out on this site is it is crap and annoying!

Posted by: GMR Jul 18 2009, 10:45 PM

OK... thanks for that... I will do it.

Posted by: Jobet Jul 18 2009, 11:01 PM

Mine comes up with those silly adverts blocking on the right hand side.Wish they had left it alone as it was OK before.

I think they were more interesting in the money the adverts can bring in than the welling being of the members on here.

It seems worse today; the forum is squashed up on the left; half the screen is taken up with just white space and just two adverts on top. Was the price worth paying to get a few quid in the till?

Perhaps we should boycott this site for its incompetence, or greed? The people that are responsible for this site clearly don't know what they are doing, or have a forum solution that is not robust enough to cope with inserting adverts properly.

I can understand them wanting to improve things; but to half do a job, tools down when it is time to go home and leave this place as if they don't care is not very professional.

The style sheets from the previous visits are cached, if you were to do Ctrl + F5 it will crap out like the rest.

Er, Ctrl + F5 reloads the page in its entirety, so if the page hasn't changed then you won't notice anything. Should, however, Bill1 do it, then he will see the new (CRAP) style that intrudes so frustratingly into the user space. I see also it is getting worse, more CRAP adverts.

ADMIN - IF WE HAVE TO HAVE THESE CRAP ADVERTS PLEASE CENTRE JUSTIFY THE PAGE AND DON'T ENCROACH THE EDIT SPACE FOR POSTS.

Mind you, if this is the way the NWN want things to go, then I feel not like using this board any more, they have spoiled it.

Posted by: GMR Jul 19 2009, 01:39 PM

I noticed more ads; they (being NWN) seem a bit obsessive with these ads. One would of thought that correcting the lay of the land would be more of a priority.... but then i suppose I could be called naive for thinking that. laugh.gif

Calm down. It's only a forum. It's not life or death. laugh.gif

A quick restart of the server will probably cure it.

It's a clumsy attempt at a panic inducing technique that I am trying to get to grips with that is championed by GMR! tongue.gif

It maybe only a forum, but it is a forum that NWN wishes us to use therefore it is not too much to expect it to be in working order.

As for a restart; read above as Admin has admitted it is there fault so no matter how many times one start the server you are going to get the same results. wink.gif laugh.gif

I don't mind the ads, we do get a free forum after all which is a pretty good one I think. Admin has said that there is a problem and they are working on it, hopefully it will be fixed on Monday. Let's all stop having a go at Admin and get back to squabbling amongst ourselves!

I agree the time has come to move on, however, without us voicing our opinion/ concerns then they (being admin) wouldn't know what was what. wink.gif

I also agree with you about these being good forums. The problem never was the adverts; per se but them overlapping the writing area.

Posted by: JeffG Jul 19 2009, 07:04 PM

Well, I've installed AdBlock Plus into Firefox and got rid of the ads, but it still doesn't give me my screen back sad.gif

Maybe if I look at the page source, I can find something else that needs blocking...

Posted by: Darren Jul 19 2009, 07:13 PM

A restart may well resolve the issue, as it can be caused by the java application partially crashing, a memory leak causing the RAM to run short.

OK, it's also likely that someone made a ham-fisted change to the HTML code too.

Follow the 3 R's

Restart
Reload
Rebuild

Aren't you jumping the gun here a bit? Admin has admitted that it is down to software problems so your suggestions won't make a blind bit of difference.

On the contrary. Reloading the base design from a previous good version will usually resolve the fault. You then reintegrate the actual content. It's a lot quicker than scanning line after line of HTML code to find the cause. The restart then allows the OSI layers in the server to load in the correct sequence.

They must have done something right- on my screen the adverts now only take up about 20% of the space. There are no white gaps and the actual forum bit takes up the rest. Hurrah! biggrin.gif

It seems a lot better and the adverts don't encroach on the writing area. There is quite a bit of white space at the bottom of the main page of the forum; but that is just being nit picky laugh.gif
