Can anyone suggest any public locations in West Berkshire from which magical sunsets can be seen? The kind of place a marriage proposal could be made, for example...

Merci

Combe Gibbet has good views - West of Newbury near Inkpen.

Combe is lovely for views but the Gibbet is more north/north-east rather than west-facing, which is what I'm after, unless there are any specific spots up there which have superb west-facing views?

Sunset marriage proposal is so cheesy.
So is a ring in a champagne glass. Do something original. I would propose with a haribo ring.

I see some excellent sunsets from the park in Wash Common, even though there is a belt of trees to the west, and the most spectacular sunset I ever saw, I saw from Bowling Green Road in Thatcham - not really proposal territory.

Spectacular sunsets happen in the whole of the western sky, so you don't particular need to see the western horizon - but crucially what you do need are the meteorological conditions that create spectacular sunsets - and I don't know how you predict when that's going to be. Once you have that all you need is to be anywhere nice.

Thanks for the ideas, I'll scout those locations later this week. It's not about the location itself, it's about it being the best place to watch the sun setting.

The most amazing sunset I've ever seen was on the Thai island of Ko Lanta, sat on the beach facing due west, watching the sun burn the most intense colours of orange & red, before disappearing beyond the horizon and lighting up the clouds with indescribable shades of pink. Bit far to go on a whim though, but that's what I want - long views, due west.

Perfectly place to bury her if she says no.
Nothing says "I love you" like a sweaty, out of breath proposal, with a sweaty palm.

What a lovely idea! Picnic basket, champagne etc! Beacon Hill would work, bit of a climb though. Donnington Castle could be nice. I'm not really feeling Combe Gibbet or Greenham Castle though.

If you were willing to look slightly further a field, Wilton Windmill or The Vyne at Hampshire could be very nice.

Best sunset I have ever seen is along the Newbury Canal on the site of the old mill, not the best site for a proposal though!

Top of the hill at the white horse, tother side of hungerford. Where the rd crosses the Ridgeway. All of wilts spread before you as the sun goes to bed in a blaze of fire and glory. Oh, and there's s car park there as well.

Incidentally, I'm seeing high whispy cloud this afternoon - and that's just the right kind to give a spectacular sunset - so could today be the day?

As above, it's not the location that's critical, it's the long uninterrupted west-facing views that I'm after, the sun will do the rest. I'm also after tried & tested locations, but thanks for the suggestions of potentials.

I agree, there are incredible views to be seen, however, not west-facing IME.

Maybe it could, I guess it depends if you're free later wink.gif

Interesting choice, given the reason it's there. wink.gif

I'd say Combe is your best bet. It's quite high, hence the view, but the Gibbet is just one location along a ridge of hills.

I was going to mention a canal scenario as baffers100 did.
I was thinking of the streams and rivulets that run across the north end of Hungerford common.
OS looks pretty west facing. and there is a small hill just above the town where Simon Kirby could arrange for the sun to set.
Nice little bridges and a pint at the Dundas on the way. You might even find a Daphne!.

A bit further and there is Avebury. You can walk around and chose the perfect spot facing west of course.
The stones have lasted for millenia (except for a bit of tidying up by Mr Marmalade).

"Diamonds like ze rocks express l'amour que je ... Shut up Christopher you are getting silly.
Why not pop in for the Great Newt of Orme and discuss this with experienced gents of a certain age.( Not counting Motormad)

Forget the sunset. Turner does good ones on post cards.!

Any dates yet?
