WBC is spending £240,000 on traffic lights for the Boundary Road crossroads by the London Apprentice pub. (see p168)

The rationale is road safety and better access.

I can't say I've endured big queues at this junction, or ever seen an accident there. Is it money well spent?

Wouldn't have thought so, unless it's part of a plan when Stirling Industrial Estate is redeveloped?

It's not though - the Twin Towers at Sterling was rejected.

This work was approved last night, and will start in 2011-12, whether you want it or not.

I'd imagine it is in preparation for the Race Course development. Bloody traffic lights are the scourge of Newbury.

Hooray! Hope it includes an allowance for pedestrians to cross as well.

Any chance of widening Boundary Road railway bridge and putting box junctions at the Boundary Road end of Stanley, Queens and York Roads too?

Last time I saw it the plan was to close Boundary Road railway bridge to all but cyclists and pedestrians. But not until the relief road has been built.

I've just found out that the Park Way/London Road junction improvement is seriously short of cash due to WBC waiving £3m of developer contributions.

So which of these needs the most urgent attention?

Source for both issues you raise?

You're hard work aren't you.

Page 10-17 of this gives the rationale for approving John Lewis, and on p17, WBC are saying this.

"Improvements to the London Road/Parkway junction. £50,000 has already been provided by the Parkway redevelopment to the widening of the London Road westbound approach; however it is now apparent that there is insufficient funding to complete the scheme."

And here's how the contribution was cut

And so to the point....is it wise WBC spending £240k on traffic lights for Boundary Road, when there's not enough to finish the road improvements connected to Park Way?

The new £93k will, presumably, contribute to the completion of the works?
The 'cut' in the contribution was over 2 years ago and was part of the horse-trading to get the project signed off.

I do not think putting lights in the Boundary Road junction is of sufficient priority to warrant spending £240k - or even a lot less. The reasoning is not clear and there are many other Highway needs in the area I suspect. If not then the money should be re-allocated.

I wonder if Boundary Road junction is key to the Race Course development?

Just do as local councillors do: speak a good job near election time and hope problems just go away.

If so, any money spent on improvements should come from the Racecourse or their developers. Stuffing housing into the tightest part of the road network will create problems the developers will largely walk away from (with stuffed wallets), and the tax payers will fund.

I agree, hence the second comment. Not that councillors have any power to prevent developments like this.
