Seeing the story about an extension of a no cold calling zone and given the reputation of cold calling (targeting old/vulernable etc), why don't we make the whole of West Berkshire a no cold calling zone and allow communities to opt-in to allow cold calling? Would certainly make it clear that west berks isn't a place to take advantage of people at the door step.

That should make it easier for canvassers come an election.

I think this explains it in the context of the overall priorities of the Universe

Can't helping thinking though, that if there was no demand for 'no cold calling zones' why are they so popular?

It would appear that I am having difficulty in following the thread on this one .
Can one opt out ? I have tried to via the telephone preference service to no avail.
If an individual has a problem I would think a whole area would have no chance .
What constitutes an unwanted call anyway ? The recipient may find it infuriating to have his tea disrupted by some johny trying to flog him a conservatory when he lives in a flat on the 18th floor , but the proprietor of the firm involved obviously needs to explore every sales avenue available when the survival of his company is at stake .
Maybe the answer is simply to remove the phone . I rarely use the wretched thing anyway and a PAYG mobile is a lot cheaper to run and no one knows my number .
Even I don't know it . tongue.gif

Sorry just noticed it concerns door step calls not phone . Will go back to my bath chair .

I don't believe it is legally enforceable. I also don't believe that it is that popular. I can understand sheltered housing set ups wanting to do this, but they can already without these "zones".

I used to hate that... for weeks, constant abuse.

Knock on the door at 8:30 on a Wednesday evening.

"HELLO *thrusts leaflet into my face* HOW ARE YOU? -MY NAME IS DAVE FROM THE LOCAL CONSERVATIVE PARTY IN YOUR LOCAL CONSTITUENCY HERE WITH SOME INFORMATION ABOUT THE UPCOMING GENERAL ELECTION. [at this point he lowers his voice from a shout to just loud..] I believe you should support the conservatives.. thanks for your support!"

No thanks, I dislike all the political parties but the Lib Dems are the ones who's policies I agree with on balance the most. Infact I'd vote UKIP but they'd never win so not wasting my vote...

"Ah you see but the Lib Dems and every other party are very bad, Conservative are very good - David Camer"....

.... he doesn't understand what it's like for the average John, he's not grounded or in touch with reality especially for the young to middle aged, middle class person.

"No he's very nice actually."

Have you met him?

"Well, you see he's a busy man..."

----

Says it all really. Basically if I WAS to vote (and I haven't for the last 2 elections) I would vote for the party I agreed with the most who DIDN'T send really annoying and argumentative old people to my house at 8pm in the evening after dinner.

If these people are only known in your community at the time of election, then they can't be doing too much in your area. It's not enough for these incumbents to sit on their patio's drinking Pimms while their little worker bees go out there and tell you to vote for them. IMHO, it's about time these incumbents were moved on.

Just another bit about cold calling doorstep or by phone. Simon Hughes MP gave me a visit in May.
He was polite until I opened my eco friendly bag and showed a Telegraph.
(and a bottle of Pinot)... Then they all gathered outside my drawing room window for a cigarette break chatting.
I have Georgian shutters so I made a fuss of shutting them.

Apart from Mumbai callers and "Survey" callers from the UK.
I have just had my first electronic voice call.. It sounded just like Prof. Steven Hawking.
It was rather spooky being spoken to by HAL from 2001. In space no one can hear you scream.
So I put the phone down.

That was Alien, and the Nostromo's computer was "Mother". Did anyone actually watch 2001 past the bit with the monkeys tossing bones (as monkeys will) to Also Sprach Zarathustra?

Anywho, No Cold Calling zones don't apply to political canvassing. Actually they don't lawfully apply to cold-calling of any variety, but hey-ho, if Trading Standards are going to police your neighbour's preference for who can knock on your door then what's not to like.

OK Simon Kirby. I strung a few bits and bobs together.
I did watch 2001 all the way through, The monkeys were the best bit.
HAL was the computer which went crazy. The rest was a jumble.
I probably saw it when it first came out. Empire Leicester SQ.

At the end of term, A couple of guys would catch a train to London and an afternoon movie ,
and then find our way home. MUUUM I am at Newbury Station, can you pick me up....
I was a nightmare.

I was surprised by an electronic voice. That was really the point.

However we have a strong group of neighbours and web links and the cleaning salesmen
have suddenly become aggressive late in the evening. I think they watch and go for some homes.
