QUOTE (blackdog @ Aug 10 2016, 04:43 PM) *
A hundred or two vehicles will do the loop each day, thousands would slow, perhaps wait at a new juntion and use up extra fuel accelerating away. Inconveniencing every user of the road to the benefit of a small minority - doesn't seem worth it to me.

if it's only "A hundred or two vehicles each day" how would this "slow thousands" and "inconvenience every user of the road"?

Because only a hundred or two go to the tip - most users of the road just drive straight past. Sticking a new junction in would inconvenience all but the few who are going to the tip.

No, the only time a any northbound traffic would be "inconvenienced" would be when one or more of "a hundred or two" needed to turn right across the flow, not "all"

P.S. On a different note that heavy flow would not have been there or through the middle of Newbury had the by pass been built on the correct side of Newbury! rolleyes.gif

Most of the time I use the road it isn't a heavy flow. A junction would have raised the cost to the local tax payer, starving other projects in the process. A Right turn would require two lanes to avoid causing a tailback and there ain't room for four lanes (north bound tends to be busiest so that gets the two lanes over south bound).

I think it's more the case that being uphill, it gets the two lanes so slow-moving lorries don't hold up the rest of the traffic.

And if it were busier than south bound, wouldn't that mean that Hampshire was emptying and Berkshire was filling up with cars? tongue.gif

But you suggested:

A right turn junction could easily have been built either controlled by a roundabout or lights.

A roundabout or lights would inconvenience anyone wishing to go straight on.

I would imagine Hampshire, which boarders other counties, have car movements to supplement the loss!

I remember reading somewhere that a traffic census showed that more cars entered Scotland than left it. smile.gif

No because the lights would be approach controlled.
You know, not changing unless triggered by the hundred or two cars wanting to turn right.
As for a roundabout, the traffic needs calming anyway and it would allow safe rejoining when exiting from the tip.

I hate traffic lights so that doesn't get my vote.

My view is: I go to the tip barely once a month, possibly quarter, so I can put up with an extra half mile when I do go compared to the lottery of being inconvenienced. I'm also not sure the traffic needs 'calming'.

Well Andy, there is a speed activated "Slow Down 50mph" sign a short distance before the tip entrance which is almost permanently illuminated! tongue.gif
