Just been watching the start of the match and wish England had an anthem that was totally English as opposed to British.

Jerusalem isn't anywhere near England! I don't understand why it always gets suggested. I think land of hope and glory is much better.

The national anthem is British, but England are playing, a separate country from Scotland, Wales or Ireland. The same reason we fly the George Cross at English events and not the Union flag.

Already claimed by the upstanding fine fellows at Twickenham. Poofballers should find their own!!! 'Please Help Me, I'm Falling'? 'Down, Down, Deeper on Down'?

It's not a song about a town in the Levant, it's about the apocalyptic new Jerusalem, and atheist that I am I can't deny that England has a long christian culture and history which is closely entwined with our national identity so Jerusalem is an excellent candidate, not least because it's such a good sing. I find Land of Hope and Glory just the tinyest bit kitsch and Victorian and really too closely associated with the last night of the proms which is a celebrationion of British nationhood rather than England.

I do not like the playing of the nations anthems at any sports event. I think that there should be a sports anthem that is sung once at all events by all teams and that should stop all the cat-calls and booing that make me cringe during the singing of national anthems. I know the players are not amateurs but a song that portrays the true Corinthian spirit would do me.

Along the lines (for that sport) of The Eton Boating Song? Perhaps we should suggest a few titles for the various sports?

Maybe at the start of soccer matches they could play Bob Marley's "Get Up, Stand Up".

There is "There'll always be an England" which even has England in the title. Don't fully remember the words, but might be a bit jingoistic for this day and age.

Edit: Just looked it up, and it seems to mix up England, Red white & blue and Britons. Plus a reference to the empire smile.gif

Yes, but with a team consisting of a myriad of nationalities, so its not really very British is it?

Don't get that at a rugby match so why at a soccer game?

Did you mean English? Perhaps I'm mistaken, but I thought you had to be English to play for England.
