How long before the first arson death or assault death?

Well, I can tell you, I wouldn't normally venture into the town centre on foot after dark any more. I recently met some people for a meal at Le Petit Square and left shortly before 10. I felt really uneasy walking past Chicago Rock and on through Eight Bells.

From one of those stories, it seems like mid-afternoon isn't too safe either, though I'm guessing there is more to that story than meets the eye.

Newbury is becoming more like Reading and will continue to do so if the out-of-towners that decide what Newbury must be like get their way.

Trying to be serious.

I suspect it is a mistake to say that Newbury is becoming more like Reading because the truth, as I understand it, is that everywhere is becoming rather less pleasant. This could well be a by-product of the recession, less money, more unemployment a general feeling of having been cheated out of the good life by the ever mysterious 'THEM'.

At the same time a look around Newbury with its sprawling unfinished building works, perpetual traffic jams and ever ongoing road works might lead one to question why anybody should feel good about living in or around Newbury.

Perhaps in a few years time when money flows like water, all the new facilities are in place and the superb new public transport system has removed the need for private cars around the area we will all look back in wonderment at the wisdom of the town planners in preparing this paradise on earth.

I thought the whole idea was to create a clone of Reading .
If the developers have their way the two will soon be joined anyway .

It makes one wonder what the Vision 2050 will do with Newbury!

It is a simple logic, more people means more a**holes.

Sad but true I'm afraid.
However the propotion of a** holes (as you so accurately put it) is growing against the number of us "normal "people.

This is progress I suppose. I personally liked the old Newbury!

Did anything actually happen to you or did you just feel uneasy?

I can tell you that I frequently walk through the town centre late at night and have never once encountered any problems.

I think the change may be in the way you perceive things rather than anything tangible changing.
