QUOTE (dannyboy @ Feb 15 2011, 11:17 AM) Just what publicans like to see! I pint of pepsi / coke costs 20p a pint to pour, yet they charge me around £2.50. Much bigger marging than lager / beer so I'm sure they are quite happy, especially as I'd drink twice as much cola than alcoholic drinks!!!

I can't believe you are drinking more than 2-3 pints of coke/pepsi.

I can't believe you are drinking more than 2-3 pints of coke/pepsi. Well, a couple of pints of cola then maybe a lemonade or two. Got to mix it up a bit ;-)

Hmm. Curious how the pubcos are blaming taxation when they're likely to be referred to the Competition Commission later this year. Sorry RG, I know you'd much rather find an excuse for more Tory-bashing, but I'd like to propose a toast to this campaign instead. http://www.fairpint.org.ukCheers

QUOTE (Bloggo @ Feb 16 2011, 08:31 AM) However I went to the Queens the other evening and only paid £2.0 for a pint of Lager. Now that's more like it. The impact of having Wetherspoons here at long last. In the Waggon, ale is £2.20 a pint and then there's the Monty's happy hour where everything's half price. The Jack o Newbury is doing ale at £2.50 a pint. However, at a fully tied house in Newbury, they pay £7 to the brewery for a bottle of rioja, which then retails at £14. After overheads, the landlord makes £2 profit per bottle. But you can go in Hogshead and buy a bottle of red (Echo Falls though, so I'm not comparing like with like) for a fiver. Grrrr.

QUOTE (blackdog @ Feb 17 2011, 01:37 AM) The pub industry is in a parlous state - but they need to get their own house in order too. Pubcos operating ties are the worst offenders, at least brewery ties are there to keep the brewery going, Pubco ties are just there to increase the Pubco profits.
Meanwhile the Nag's Head is closed (supposedly for refurbishment) but the lease is still up for sale and the Bricklayers/Purple Lounge is also available (http://uk.businessesforsale.com/uk/search/Pubs-for-sale-in-Berkshire)
And the Clock Tower looks ever sadder. Punch Partnerships, LOL.
