Britain leaves the EU, Trump becomes President of the United States, and Boris becomes UK Prime Minister. All a bit surreal really, but nonetheless likely to happen, so to orient ourselves would you like to suggest which dystopian film or novel English life is going to be most like in this brave new world?

Let me start with Children of Men.

Idiocracy

"The film tells the story of two people who take part in a top-secret military hibernation experiment, only to awaken 500 years later in a dystopian society where advertising, commercialism, and cultural anti-intellectualism have run rampant and that is devoid of intellectual curiosity, social responsibility, and coherent notions of justice and human rights."

I found a nice quiz on t'internet: Who said it, Idiocracy's President Camacho, or Donald Trump:

  1. “Remember, new ‘environment friendly’ light bulbs can cause cancer.”
  2. “I will be the greatest jobs president that God ever created, I tell you that.”
  3. “I will build a great wall — and nobody builds walls better than me, believe me.”
  4. “I beat China all the time. All the time.”
  5. “If there is one word to describe Atlantic City, it’s Big Business. Or two words — Big Business.”
  6. “Listen, you mother****ers, we’re going to tax you 25 percent!”
  7. “This very expensive GLOBAL WARMING bull**** has got to stop.”
  8. “Sorry losers and haters, but my IQ is one of the highest — and you all know it!”
  9. “So you’re smart, huh? I thought your head would be bigger. Looks like a peanut!”

Still, could be worse, could be quoting from The Little Red Book. And no one would be so stupid and insensitive as to quote the thoughts of a mass murdering, genocidal maniac? Would they? Oh, wait!

The concern is the people that turn on to the garbage: left, right; red or blue. For someone allegedly with a high IQ, he spouts some baloney.

Getting the votes though, the people love it! Mind you we are talking bout America and when your names Bubba, you're married to Darleen, your favourite song is the one about the big yella dog and your primary leisure activity is driving your pickup while tossing Budweiser can out the window, why it's not too surprising is it? smile.gif

What could be worse than all that is if Corbyn became Prime Minister; Dr Strangelove

It would be awful, having Prime Minister who actually talked and listened to everyday people, I agree. Much better having 'the Bankers friend' because they do such a great job.
As for us laughing at dear old Donald Trump; isn't that exactly what Nigel Farrage is saying; except with a classy English accent.

Yes; he loves the bomb, in the sense that it has helped make his name. Also; it is about mad men and he certainly fits the bill.

But that is the problem, he doesn't listen to the people, he listens to the nutters of the far right, in fact he is one of them. At least bankers have achieved something, all he has ever achieved is voting against his party 500 odd times. Between Corbyn and a banker I'll go for the banker every time. In the 70s we were the sick man of Europe, Corbyn was amongst that and wants to take our country back to those days.

I also don't think Farrage is saying the same as Trump.

You are quite right. The bankers gave certainly achieved something, indeed something none of us thought was even possible; the biggest economic failure ever. And have they learned anything? Oh yes; that old maxim is true; why give a sucker an even break.

Who are the nutters if the far right? Is the old labour suppporter who New Labour Gordon Brown labled a bigot one of them?

Isn't a policy of isolationism exactly what Farrage is promoting?

I am not disputing that, nevertheless, I would rather have them than Corbyn.

There are nutters in both extremes, but that doesn't change what I said about Corbyn and he won't win a general election.

Jeremy Corbyn comes over as sound and particularly well-balanced to me; he doesn't have an ego to speak of, I love his thoughts on making politics democratic and accessible, and I like how he addresses the issues rather than the personalities. His thoughts on national ownership of rail are growing on me, and he's spot on when he says the UK should cancel the Trident upgrade and spend the money more wisely. Difficult to see how any of that is mad really.

Of course he does, I wouldn't argue with how you see it, I would be surprised if you said anything else. However, that alone won't help him win the general election. But carry on dreaming.

I'm on the fence right now. I'm simply saying Farrage and Trump are preaching the same thing, just different words and accents. As fast as I'm concerned, the biggest issue I have with 'no' is our national capability to carry it off. I think we've lost it, we haven't the skills or expertise any longer. Added to which, I really can't see your banker mates providing the long term investment capital we'd necessarily need. The Americans can work in splendid isolation as it has a massive home market, ironically a fully developed 'common market' of 50 states with a common currency and 'ever closer union'.

You haven't said why Corbyn won't win an election. After all John Major pulled it off, surrounded by some real, albeit right wing, extremist cranks. Clement Attlee did the same, twice, even with Clause 4 and really powerful left wingers like Bevan.

So, who is going to fund our exit; because gaining new markets will take a bit if time? Why won't Corbyn win an election; once the people have really noticed what we are heading for?

I'm not so sure; at the last rail forum I went to, a good number, in fact a majority, of season ticket holders from the blue Home Counties had a lot of good things to say about Labour rail policy.
