Does the extra weight negate the benefits of leccy trains!
Probably to some extent.
The
AT300 for the West of England were always going to be bi-mode as the route was / is not part of the electrification programme.
It would appear from the report in the NWN that these are also going to be used on the Bedwyn services as, as far as I know, there will be no other bi-mode trains available. (5 car inter-city trains to Bedwyn .... WOW!)
The
Class 800 which are being built for the (eventually) electrified lines to Bristol and South Wales were originally intended to be electric only but, due to the botched electrification project, they are now being built as bi-mode as the wires won't be ready in time for their delivery!
This has some advantages mainly being that if the OLE fails (which it does on a regular basis on other electrified lines) the trains will not be stranded with no power.
I predict that many of you, when you are sat in cramped airline style carriages with tiny windows and an engine throbbing away beneath you, will wish you still had the HST's.
For example, have you ever travelled on a "Voyager" run by Cross Country? YUK!
Let's hope I'm wrong!
