Does the extra weight negate the benefits of leccy trains!

Victory in battle for direct rail servicesTrains to continue to Bedwyn following electrification to Newbury in 2018

A committee of MPs has cast doubt over whether the £2.8bn rail electrification scheme between London and Cardiff can be delivered by 2018

Probably to some extent.
The AT300 for the West of England were always going to be bi-mode as the route was / is not part of the electrification programme.
It would appear from the report in the NWN that these are also going to be used on the Bedwyn services as, as far as I know, there will be no other bi-mode trains available. (5 car inter-city trains to Bedwyn .... WOW!)
The Class 800 which are being built for the (eventually) electrified lines to Bristol and South Wales were originally intended to be electric only but, due to the botched electrification project, they are now being built as bi-mode as the wires won't be ready in time for their delivery! rolleyes.gif
This has some advantages mainly being that if the OLE fails (which it does on a regular basis on other electrified lines) the trains will not be stranded with no power.

I predict that many of you, when you are sat in cramped airline style carriages with tiny windows and an engine throbbing away beneath you, will wish you still had the HST's.
For example, have you ever travelled on a "Voyager" run by Cross Country? YUK!
Let's hope I'm wrong!

Is the Reading to Twickenham train a bi-mode? That's fast and quiet, but not particularly comfortable.

No, that's 750V DC 3rd rail electric only.
No nasty polluting diesel engines there!
Newbury will be 25KV AC overhead so you'll never see one here!.

Ah so all leccy isn't the same! Those '750's are like being sat on a motorbike. Its acceleration is almost tiring!
