This extract from recent Press Release from TVP's Chief Constable is a magnificent in
terms of its' lack of clarity; see last para!

"Over the last year we have reviewed the way we respond to and investigate incidents and
crime in our communities to see if our structure and processes effectively manage
the demand from and the needs of the public.

In response to this we will, during the summer, be making changes to the way
we are structured working within three key areas: investigation, response and neighbourhood. Our aim is to create a more effective and efficient police service which will ensure
that we can provide the best service to you when you need us.

We have mapped out where our demand for service is, ensuring that resources are
targeted at the areas of greatest need, at times of greatest need
and to the most vulnerable in our communities.

This will mean that in some areas and at certain times we will have more or
less police officers available"

So we'll only have PCSOs on duty at times?

It's much cheaper employing PCSOs for the basics and I'm sure they do a good job. Interesting though that their chief thinks they are 'more or less Police Officers' - I always thought that was a jibe!

Unfortunately, they lack the powers of a Police Officer, including the power of arrest.

They have the power to issue various fixed penalty notices and seize unconcealed drugs/alcohol as appropriate. They have the power to require a name and address of a person suspected of motoring offences or anti-social behaviour

They don't even have the power of search unless in the company of and supervised by a constable

Oh I see. Not a lot of point really is there? Essentially just 'ceremonial' policemen then rather like our dear Mayor; all pageant and no power.

Oh I am sure Greenham precept payers won't agree with you? Especially now he is able to get his sticky little fingers on their precept cash again! It would seem he certainly has the power to make precept money disappear quicker than the blink of an eye? rolleyes.gif

..and for the aspiring shoplifter it seems the way has been cleared for them to learn their craft in the knowledge that the police are no longer interested in them.... provided they keep their non-purchases below £100.

Asked how shopkeepers would deal with this crime the police responded that they could fill a form in and hand it to the police.... ffs....
