This is regrettable, but understandable. If one ever wanted to go and watch a film in peace, then Wednesday afternoon would be a good choice. I would like to think, however, that on school holidays, the cinema would get busier during the day.

Putting my 'favoured' negative hat back on, I do fear for the long term sustainability of the cinema and it becoming a tax payer's liability.

Given the subject matter of the film I'm not surprised. I think they've missed an S and an H out of the title.

There is that of course. A cinema will be only as busy as the quality of the film on view.

So have you actually seen the film, or is it you do not like MJ

Sounds great. What's on next week, The Paul Gadd Story?

TR - Please ignore user23 - his sole purpose in life is to pour scorn on people whose tastes or opinions are different from his. We are used to him - you probably won't be.

Glad you enjoyed the film.

I see the 'Orange Wednesdays' two for one cinema ticket offer is valid at the Newbury Vue. Maybe you only paid for one ticket?

Ignore me because I have a different opinion on the film than someone else?

Seems a bit daft that, forums are all about different opinions.

Have you seen the film user? And yes it does matter.

Seeing as you seem to have a literal turn of mind, I'd better spell it out then. I should have said "ignore user23's scornful comments".

You are perfectly entitled to your own opinions, as is everybody else. The difference is that you tend to mock others whose opinions or tastes differ from yours.

Back to the OP: did you take the opportunity to sneak into the "luxurious VIP seats" when no-one was looking? smile.gif

Posted by: Iommi Nov 21 2009, 01:29 AM

The Paul Gadd point suggested the opinion of MJ goes beyond simply liking something or not!

Posted by: Bill1 Nov 22 2009, 04:39 PM

Having now visited the cinema, late yesterday afternoon, I would prefer if they had staff informing people what is being queued for as we nearly missed the start of our choice of film by not knowing (as with some others) that the long line of people standing at the internal entrance for ALL screens was for Twilight only. Also would prefer seperate paying points for films and food etc.

Apart from that I was as impressed as I'd expected to be, i.e. very.

Posted by: Biker1 Nov 22 2009, 08:27 PM

Do you think, after the initial novelty has worn off, that the cinema will be able to maitain enough custom to survive?

I don't know.

Only time will tell.

I hope so.

If you want a screemer any time soon, visit the cinema when 'Paranormal Activity' comes out (wednesday), supposed to be very scary and the scariest so far for a long time! Made simular to Cloverfield with the camera.

I think this film is also supposed to be a true story, not sure. Check the trailer out if you're interested.

Comes out on Wednesday and i will be there! But probably going to be packed so book your tickets quick!

EDIT: Book your tickets for Harry Brown too, very good!!!

It's 'The Forth Kind' that's based on true stories.

According to TV adverts this film will stop your heart - so I will be avoiding it as a danger to my health. wink.gif

Ladytup and I decided to go to the new vue cinema today ( Wednesday ) to see the "block buster " 2012 .

We paid for our "concessionary " seats and were offered the choice of upgrade to more comfortable ones for the additional cost of £1.50 / head .We declined the offer on financial grounds as much as anything , but that aside we found the auditorium completely empty apart from our good selves . This allowed us to try the deluxe seats for free though we actually watched from the cheaper seats as they seemed just as comfortable .
The film itself was pure Hollywood , though we both thoroughly enjoyed it and felt the new cinema was a vast improvement on the ones we used to have in Newbury .

We shall certainly attend again though . tongue.gif

How long before it shuts during the working day?

Posted by: Roost Nov 25 2009, 04:37 PM

I too have visited the cinematic experience that is NewVUEry cinema (see what they did there....?!)

Overall, quite impressed.
Saw the Christmas Carol 3d thing and thoroughly enjoyed it! Although Jim Carrey's vocal characterisation of Scrooge didn't 'alf remind me of Montgomery Burns from The Simpsons! ("Ah Marley, release the hounds...!") and a couple of the other characters veered dangerously towards **** Van Dyke-land in their accents but technically very, very good and mucho enjoyable.

I'll also echo the earlier point about seperate pay points for food etc. Me and the Roosts got thoroughly confuzzed, particularly when the automated machine refused all of our debit / credit cards! It did actually crosss my mind that it shouldn't cost THAT much...!

Good cinema but the access stairs and escalator seem a bit small. Anyone know if there are longer term plans to have a larger foyer and access?

Posted by: Roost Nov 25 2009, 04:39 PM

Wasn't being rude on my last post. I was referring to the eminent American actor and solver of afternoon murder mysteries in 45 minutes, Richard van Dyke (but with the abbreviated forename!)

Well, I've booked for the 1330 performance of 2012 on Monday. Looks like it will be lonely, since I am the only one so far...

Not that surprising really, I too have found this when I've been lucky enough to have time off during the normal working week for the majority of people and visited cinemas in other towns.

Took the family to the new cinema on Saturday hoping to see a 16.30 screening but it was fully booked so had to get tickets for the 17.30 instead, so it is swings and roundabouts.

Posted by: Simon Nov 26 2009, 11:59 AM

I saw 2012 at newbury last night and it was jam packed.

Booked my tickets online and picked them up form the machines so avoided all queues

Great film (although very very long) and really comfy seats (upgraded to the VIP - well worth £1.50 extra)

got a list of prices now so will be be going there on my days off too

Ditto - went to see District 9 at Festival Place a few weeks ago on a midweek afternoon driving back from Guildford to Surrey. We were the only people in one of the larger screens there.

I think claiming space-alien "probing" and the paranormal are based on truth is stretching the meaning of the word truth. A bit like saying Dr Who is science and EastEnders is entertainment.

Posted by: Gumbo Nov 30 2009, 10:24 AM

Mrs Gumbo went to the new cinema on Friday and had the pleasure of two drunks stumbling in quite a way through the film. Apparently the first one stumbled in and shouted out 'oi Andy in ere' the audience responded with a few 'ssshhs' and 'be quiet' and then he shouted, "I'm trying to find a seat" this was greeted by laughter and then after a couple of mins they got up and left. Mrs Gumbo, who I must point out is not originally from the town (unlike me), said to me when she came home, and I quote, 'only in Newbury!'............probably not entirely true but not a great reflection of our town.

On the plus side she thoroughly enjoyed the film, thought the cinema was small but good and loved the pic'n'mix.

She did say there was nothing downstairs, will this be where the supposed restaurants will go?

Yes Gumbo, There will be (after reading a few articles and a blueprint of the layout of this new cinema) one pub and two restaurants. If you knocked on the white walls downstairs their hollow, with probably huge amounts of room inside. I guess they wanted to open the cinema quickly to not disappoint people after saying it will be open on a certain date.

I would also like to add something about this cinema...

One late evening (saturday just gone), i visited the cinema for a late viewing of the film, Paranormal Activity. Even though i knew it was really bad, there was nothing better to do with my evening at such a late time. I was with 3 other friends who were over the age of 15 to view this film. We were not allowed to watch any film even if it is a certificate 15 unless we are over 18 and had ID. This was because it was passed 10 o'clock. Does this sound stupid to you? Now i know most of you are going to say this is to prevent anti-social behaviour but really, they have security downstairs at all times anyway and their loosing out on alot of money because of this. I was very disapointed and almost flipped when i got told this.

When i get the chance i will complain further about this and im pretty sure this is the only cinema that does this.

Oh and let me just add, about £3.50 for a WKD bottle (yes they have a license) shocking, but this is normal for a cinema i guess.

I have now heard that there are still NO agreements / arrangements / contracts in place in regards to who is going to fill these quite substantial areas!

Iwonder what will happen if they don't get filled....

Rise in prices p'raps?!!

They can't break the law, especially as it is such a new cinema. I doubt they want to lose their cinema license and incur a massive fine, though I think the law only restricts people under 12 from being in the cinema after 22:00. Then again based on the over 18 part it sounds like it was an over 18's only showing, which Vue and Odeon do for films 15 cert and lower. I mean I was refused entry to 'Up' in Reading because I didn't realise it was an over 18 showing, and I hadn't thought to bring ID.

Posted by: JeffG Nov 30 2009, 07:19 PM

Pleased to report that I was not alone for the early afternoon showing of 2012 today, and in fact I thought I was going to miss the start because of the queue for tickets for that and other screens.

First cinema I've been to, though, where the person issuing tickets then goes off and serves popcorn and drinks, thereby making the wait longer!

And I could have done without nearly 20 minutes of ads at the beginning (so being late wouldn't have mattered anyway wink.gif )

Posted by: Jacklets Dec 5 2009, 04:22 PM

I took junior Jacklets and friend to the saturday morning childrens screening - really good value at just 95p a ticket, however the quoted price of over £4 for their smallest bucket of popcorn or tub of chocs would have cost more than the total for the tickets. I knew it wouldn't be cheap and it's the same in all cinemas, but surely it's time they reVUEed their food & drink prices!

Posted by: JeffG Dec 5 2009, 04:28 PM

Ah - Saturday morning cinema! That takes me back. I used to sit upstairs in the ninepennies because parents felt I shouldn't mix with the sixpenny crowd downstairs biggrin.gif

We are thrilled with the cinema in our house. It's so lovely for our young teenagers to have somewhere to go with their friends. It will be getting a lot of business from Ziggy Towers.
