ONE is the legendary megastructure of immense dimensions, designed to unite the speaking peoples of the world.
The other is the Tower of Babel.

My colleagues gave decidedly mixed responses to my suggestion that Newbury's new cinema looks like Pieter Brueghel the Elder's 1543 oil painting of the Tower of Babel, but I'm convinced that there must be someone out there who agrees.

For those who need brushing up on their bible stories, the people of the world built the Tower of Babel, dedicated to the glory of man, and so tall that it would reach the heavens. God destroyed it, scattered the population across the world, and never since have they spoken a common language.

I can't remember what the moral of the story was, but I'm sure it was a good one.

Does it really matter. The thing will be a financial white elephant anyway so within five years it will be pulled down and replaced with a block of oh so desirable flats.
If a single screen cinema couldn't be run successfully, what chance has a multi screen one

Didn't really happen much.

Dizzee Rascal sampled a couple of hits and apparently The Streets covered Billie Jean, but not much else.
