QUOTE (Blake @ Oct 12 2012, 04:11 PM) Great, so I see British Gas are yet again jacking up their prices, just as winter is about to descend.
HOW much more can people take of huge utility price increases?
I am seriously looking at going off-grid for at least my electricity. Not only are the utilities hypocritical causers of climate change and pollution but they now sting their consumers for every last pound of flesh.
I am beginning to think there is some sort of international criminal conspiracy at work here. Nobody seems very accountable.. Greedy, robbing, amoral, thieving ********. What's the government doing? Sod all, that's what!

QUOTE (Biker1 @ Oct 12 2012, 06:44 PM) Seems all the privatised, ex - nationalised services are taking us for a ride doesn't it? It does help Dave and his mates shares portfolio look a lot healthier though! He ought to be more grateful to Cleggy for helping him into power din;t he? He can't wait until March next year and then him and his mates can divvy up the National Health service between them just look at the amount of money they can get into then? Still someone has to make money in this financial crisis and Dave is just ensuring he and his mates are at the front of the queue as usual. We are all in it together you know? Except Tory politicians of course!

And annoyingly the Frog owned EDF have strict price controls in their homeland, around 2 to 3% I think, so they seek to maximise income from less controlled markets to keep French customers & investors happy. French Government remains big shareholder I recall, as they ignore EU rulings for the Utilities to be divorced from the state.

Of the 30 million taxpayers in the country the top 300.000 (or the 1% as they are known) have received tax breaks from the Tories totaling over £42,000.00 each p.a. So they are helping some people.

Small point of fact to those who fall for the current line from the opposition about the top rate being cut to 45p. Labour put up the top rate of tax to 50p in April 2010, just before an election they knew they would probably lose - they wanted to pass on a ticking bomb to the the Tories. So what was the top rate of tax during the previous 12 years when Labour were in power? Err, 40p anyone?

QUOTE (Weavers Walk @ Oct 13 2012, 07:15 PM) Nowt wrong with putting the tax up when incomes are going up. That's normal.
But if the Tories wanted to cut taxes they could have spread it over everyone. But they didn't did they? Instead they funded the 1 percents' tax break by freezing pensioners personal allowances. (estimated cost of £80 each per year). This is an example of why democracy won't work.

QUOTE (Weavers Walk @ Oct 13 2012, 07:15 PM) Nowt wrong with putting the tax up when incomes are going up. That's normal. Never quite understood that concept! In effect it gives the public sector the belief that they can spend what they like when the good times roll. Probably one of the contributory factors to the state we are in right now.

QUOTE (Weavers Walk @ Oct 13 2012, 07:15 PM) Nowt wrong with putting the tax up when incomes are going up. That's normal. Is it normal? Why? What's the rationale? Tax rates are effectively a percentage. If you earn £100, you pay (for example) 20p in the £ tax (ie 20% which equals £20). If you earn £200 then you would pay £40 tax. That's not an increase in the tax rate; only in the tax take.
