I think my first (legal) pint cost me 1/9.

Seems to have gone up a bit, then. smile.gif

Aye, back in my day you were lucky if you could get a thimble to drink beer from!!

Try telling that to kids these days, don't know they're born! wink.gif

Seriously though, I can recall quite a few years ago when I went to stay at CentreParcs and thought that the unnamed lager (as I don't want to advertise and have now converted to a considerably better tipple) lager was quite cheap, then being about 10p cheaper that Newbury, only to be informed by some Lahndoners that it were proper pricey!

As long as I can recall, Newbury has been among the most expensive places for a pint that I have lived in or been to.

Whilst we are on the point - When did Cider get so expensive?
It was always the cheap alternative to lager but now some establishments in Newbury are selling it at nearly £4 a bottle blink.gif

Chairman of the West Berkshire branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), Adrian Bean, said that after conversations with landlords, he thought tax, rent and suppliers were the main obstacles to lowering prices.
“Rents tend to be as high as they are in London,” he added.

So what ! I spotted a Pub in the City today selling London Pride for £2.50 a pint. huh.gif

Wot - even this expensive?

'At the other end of the scale, customers of bars of the InterContinental Hotels Group were charged an average of between £3.53 and £3.30 for a pint of standard lager in a number of regions, said the union.

The next most expensive were Youngs managed pubs in London, where the price of standard lager was an average of £3.25 a pint. '

I only ask as I've not been in there for years

The Lock Stock and Barrel breached the £3.00 a point a while back. The Beer festival they have going at the moment has raised the price well into the £3.00 a pint bracket.

If Surrey serves the most expensive pints in England at £3.01, then that puts the SLB in the most expensive pubs in the country category.

The story is from here: Surrey pubs serve most expensive pints

I have heard that the Hogshead have a 'friends' scheme on Facebook that entitles them to a discount, making Carling £2.20.

£3.00 a pint is crazy. Everytime I come back to town it's 10% more expensive seemingly. Time was you could go out with a pocket of shrapnel and comfortably have enough for a few pints and a game of arrers (cheaper than pool and way more fun) - now it feels like I have to have twenty quid in the pocket if I am getting a round for a couple of mates in at some point.

Not any better here mind you - a decent beer is about $6, though all that Bud Light garbage is cheaper. Miss Real Ale, but loving the Microbrewery presence of SoCal.

and people wonder why pubs are closing?

Because they seem to think punters have bottomless pockets.

Sadly, you are so right - closing in unprecendented numbers, week by week. Hardly surprising if even provincial pubs charge prices like these.

Hungerford is probably amongst the dearer pubs.
A pint of Fosters in the Plume is £3.20 and in the 3 Swans it's £3.30.
Streuth, I need a drink!!!!

nice idea but will have zero impact. the only thing that will raise eyebrows is people not going into the pubs on fri and sat nights. the thing to do would be start a facebook group telling people to stay at home for 1 weekend, no-one go out at all, that would get things moving! Also that might make the rip off taxi drivers take note too...

True but not all pubs in Newbury (Berkshire) are rip-offs to the extent mentioned here.

Pig And Paper was even more expensive than LSB. Over £3 for a basic (Carling, Fosters etc) lager is not unusual in Newbury now I'm afraid.

I am running a quiz on Sunday nights at a town centre pub (Dolphin) on Sunday evenings (8.30 - 10.00). When I did this a few years back we averaged about 50 people a week taking part. Now it's less than half that, sometimes much less sad.gif

The Dolphin, by the way still charges just below £3.00 for a basic pint.

Ah well, he always did prefer free publicity!

For everyone else though, as a Quiz Billy veteran, I would highly recommend his quizzes.

I always enjoyed them!
