Not sure if it's been mentioned on here yet and I haven't bought the NWN for a while.... but remember the old Courage Brewery? Remember the stonking great silos? Well they are going to be crawling along the West Berks roads from this Thursday so it might be a day to shirk from home...

The only picture I can find of them is this (left hand side). Pretty big beasts.. 22 of them in total being dragged along in 12 convoys over the next two weeks

Details are on here with routes and dates. linky thing

I know they'll have specialists teams with them but Gawd knows how they're going to get around the Thatcham northern bypass with such big loads. Traffic islands in the middle of the road, tight turn from Cold Ash Hill onto Tull Way, mini-roundabouts, loads of overhanging branches, This Thursday is going to be the time where they're going to find out whether their route surveyor has cocked up but I reckon it will be worth watching at some locations...

Gosh, I didn't know Thatcham had a northern bypass smile.gif. Or is that the M4?

Ever wondered where that north bound road goes from the roundabout that joins Turnpike Road and the Bath Road (A4)?

I wonder why they did not just go down the A33 to Basingstoke and on the M3?

Even more confusing it that they seem to be going through Whitchurch rather than stay on the A34 an bypass it. huh.gif sad.gif blink.gif

The other obvious route would be M4/A34.

Why wouldn't these be transported at night? M4 - A34 - M3 - Southampton docks, job's a good 'un.

I'm assuming the silos are being re-used as it would be easier still to cut them up on site. Anyone know what they're going to be used for?

Out of interest, I wonder if they're too tall to be floated out on barges down the Thames?

Maybe they could. However, they would then need to be towed across some of the most dangerous water in the Channel (Dogger Bank) - and then down the busiest shipping lane in the world.

I imagine the choice of the route is to avoid low bridges.

I was told that when they moved big power station vessels from the Midlands to Southampton they used the A338 rather than the A34.

Vaguely. I just assumed it was another housing development.

I would have thought that there was still somewhere in London where they could be transferred on to a sea going ship. You are also presuming that they are going west out of the Channel. Perhaps they are going the other way - which would make shipment out of London more sensible.

However, they look far too big for transport down the Thames, they probably wouldn't fit into the locks or under many of the bridges.

And Dogger Bank is in the North Sea, not the Channel.

Apparently the silos are destined for Poland. Being held at Southampton till all 22 are on site in the dock before transfer to ship.

And so is the mouth of the Thames.

To get from the Thames to the Channel means crossing Dogger Bank

Only if you are the Spanish Armada!!!
Dogger Bank

I suspect you are thinking of the Goodwin Sands?

Of course, some say the Dogger Bank is the road adjacent to Greenham Common, but that is a whole new story
