So we have another supermarket in town, well its more of a convenience store.

Morrisons Opens

I thought I would pop in lunch time and grab a bite to eat and heard at least 5 people comment how small the shop is. If you have not been in, the shop is approximately half the size of the old HMV with no access to the car park.

So what do you think, should they have made full use of the ground floor?

It was an existing building though, and with room needed for storage and presumably an office I doubt they could have made it much bigger.

There is plenty of room up stairs, the top floor is almost as big as the ground floor. If I remember correctly (I used to work in that building when Mortimer's were there) there's at least half of the top floor which could be used for storage, the rest was toilets and staff room etc.

I think they will also loose a lot of walk through customers.

They've probably gone small because customer numbers will drop when on street parking charges are implemented...laugh.gif

Put it this way; it is a lot bigger than what they previous had in Newbury; which was non-existent.

If it is a success then they can think bigger.

It's the same size as Tesco had when they occupied the site in the 70's and 80's.

Is it because our expectaions of what a supermarket should stock have been distorted by out-of-town giants?
Is it because store don't make the best use of space?

Time will tell if they can cope with Tesco, Waitrose, Lidl and Sansbury's all within a relatively short walk.

Pity they can't open a petrol station. That might bring prices down to that which most other towns enjoy.
Or would they just join the Sainsburys / Tesco cartel? sleep.gif

Sainsbury's can't be playing the game - 2p a litre cheaper on Diesel at the weekend than their rivals up the hill.

Perhaps the poll needed some alternative options, which would have been interesting to see how many people just don't care. Personally I've been well and truly branded and am so loyal to my existing supermarchés I probably won't be spending money with the new kid in town anyway.

Of course, I'll have to pop in there now, just to see how small it is!

Yes, that's what I thought. Morrisons is a northern shop, selling northern things. So why is it being discussed in a Newbury forum?

Just because something can be seen in Newbury doesn't mean its a a valid matter for discussion. The Forum Police are very hot on this; we are expected to behave. This is Newbury please, no question, no thinking, and no idea.
