Bah Humbug young Bill!

All that extra racket created by those young ne'er-do-wells in the evening.
Of course they're more likely to hang around the school that they spend ages trying to get away from than going down the park and supping their cheap cider (yes, that's cider, not cidre).

I'd like to know who's gonna run the bar in the daytime tho?! New job role for the dinner ladies p'raps?

Thousands of the value of my house, honest.......

Interesting that a school feel it needs to serve alcohol at events - is it really necessary? Does it set a good example to the pupils?

Cheese and wine event without wine would be pretty pointless.

I don't really see anything good about this. I think the school needs to remember it is a school not a conference and banqueting centre. I would also say that people who move next to a school have a right to complain if the school drastically changes what it is doing, I don't think it is "NIMBYISM".

This may be a bore, but I served time in a Shropshire School.
I became a "Senior Student" and lived in a private part of the Headmaster's House.
I think they didn't know what to do with me. We (about 6) had a beer allowance.
Well that didn't include trying to dodge teachers in the towns pubs!

I still had to do studies, play rugby and fives, and cricket.
Don't know how I managed it.
Especially after a 6am cold bath and Divinity class before breakfast.

"Music in country churches" rely on a glass of Pinot, after all.

Meanwhile; back at the original thread...

I understand that this licence was simply to save admin costs of getting separate licences for events they might hold. The school will become accountable should it become a nuisance. I'd like to think the events should help finance the school as well.

Meanwhile; NIMBYism is quite understandable where some many people have significant investments in their homes.

Church halls typically have an alcohol licence so I don't see what the problem is with a school having one. Mind, I wouldn't be at all happy if I lived next to a school that regularly hosted noisy drunken parties, but is that going to happen?

Does serving alcohol at events set a bad example?

In my view this is good news as another venue for events will hopefully lead to more things happening in Newbury

Brilliant if you don't live there. So long as it isn't on your doorstep.

"Music in country churches" rely on a glass of Pinot, after all.

Only for their profits - most of the audience would be as happy with a glass of fruit juice at half the price.

That said how many country churches have premises licences?

Those who call it a "quiet residential area" obviously haven't been woken up by the drunks going home from town at three o'clock in the morning. I doubt whether the school having a licence or not will have any noticeable effect.

I'll be guilty of some schadenfreude here, but if you don't complain to councillors, or just vote Tory because that is what mum did, then good riddance, this is what you get - whatever it is.

I don't see this being a problem,. It's not like the Sixth Form rooms will have a stocked bar and optics... (although no doubt some Sixth Formers might give that a try)

I assume it's to help make social events like PTA Quiz Nights etc a bit more of an attraction for folk? Kennet School used to run PTA quizzes every month and ran a bar for the evening, but all was packed away and gone by the end of evening. It all helps to raise funds now that St Barts is going for Academy status.
