I was crossing the Sainsbury's roundabout today and the green man said it was safe to cross but a car drove straight through the red light at high speed just I was about to cross.
Now I know the lady looked mortified and she realised what she had done but it's no excuse. If someone elderly had been crossing they'd have been dead.
This set of lights is dangerous for pedestrians - Drivers regulalry go through on red and the sequence of the lights mean that pedestrians arrive at the second crossing just as the man go's from green to red - encouraging them to run across.
This is an accident waiting to happen. Sorry to sound melodramatic but I honestly believe that it is a certainty that someone will be knocked over and killed very soon. sad.gif

I have been asking for these lights to be pedestrian friendly since they were installed. The gap between the 'on island' light turning red to stop traffic and the green man allowing pedestians to cross needs to be longer to allow for amber dodgers.

Not waiting to happen - it has already happened, though hopefully the person knocked down was not killed. I passed the scene just after. Police and ambulance in attendance. I expect it was reported in the NWN at the time (this was a couple of months ago).

Though judging by the position of the victim either they were dragged some way, or they were chancing it by not using the crossing at all.

Yes I agree entirely with your observation but how many times has a pedestrian attempted to cross with the traffic still live ?
I have stood at this junction many times and witnessed the great unwashed chance their luck with a cavalier disregard for their own or others safety.
Not too sure the answer but something definitely needs doing.

People don't seem to think that amber lights mean stop either, a lot see it as an excuse to speed up in order to make it through before the red.

Drivers seem to ignore (or don't see) red lights anywhere these days not just the Sainsburys roundabout.
It seems to be becoming more common sad.gif
As for cyclists...........well! ohmy.gif

Who have you asked, and what have the responses been? Please tell us, sounds like it might make a good story for the NWN? I can't take all the drama and generally use the subway provided myself

The Tory canvassers twice and have approached the councillors on the Town Hall Steps.

On a few occassions the fencing has been buckled where a vehicle has hit it.

I believe this was an elderly gentleman who got knocked over. Not apportioning blame but think he must have used the crossing, as apart from the pedestrian section, there is a barrier.

Maybe not an elderly gentleman, but have you seen the number of people who chance it by crossing anywhere between Sainsbury's and the BK roundabout, where there is a central barrier the whole way along?

Yep - including climbing over the barrier!

Unfortunately one still has to negotiate at least three sets of crossing lights to get to the underpass ,assuming Sainsburys is the principal target . sad.gif

I've often seen this happen. Didn't a pedestrian get knocked down a couple of months ago there on the crossing? You are lucky that the driver didn't think he was in the film Death Race 2000; then his miss will lose him points.

Didn't read the whole thread I guess. (See reply no 3)

I assume the traffic jumping the red light is going south on the A339 across the Kings Rd traffic coming from Sainsbury. This has to be one of the most jumped lights anywhere. Drivers cross the set of lights at amber alongside the police station and then don't realise that a few feet further on is another set of lights which are not too obvious to strangers. I nearly had the front taken off my car recently in exactly this way. Fortunately I saw him/her out of the side of my eye and was able to stop but it was very close.

Not really, just what interests me. Like starting from the beginning and going no further.

Not really; I am a unique individual who writes what he thinks, not what other people think. However, and saying that; if you had valuable time you wouldn't be on this forum. My contribution helped you write something to alleviate your boredom. No need to thank me; it is always pleasure to help a much loved forum comrade.
