Newbury Today Forum _ Newbury News _ Greenham Common Posts

Posted by: Simon Kirby Feb 20 2012, 06:37 PM

Does anyone know what the posts on Greenham Common are, 18" high, in lines, some red-topped, some green-topped, around the runway area. Not in our regular doggie-walking area so they may have been there some time.

Thanks.

Surveyors posts ?

Posted by: Nothing Much Feb 20 2012, 07:59 PM

This is total guesswork, but might have to do with underground fuel lines still there.
Rather than tankers lumbering up the A11 (before I was born) with fuel for the WW2 times
& Kerosene for the jets later.
They,or various types of little markers are all over Norfolk. Mostly to old 8th USAAF sites.

Helicopters can follow the markers to check. They are still maintained and painted often.
There are not many Norfolk airfields apart from RAF Marham working now.

I still think Sculthorpe takes in U2s.

Bacton has done the same recently with underground gas pipeworks. New little posts with fancy tops

The pipes are still there, conspiracy#4 on my list!

Breathing tubes for the Iranians tunnelling into the missile silos?

I think they marked areas to keep off of during the bird nesting season?

Ah yes, thanks Ron, I have some recollection of that now, I'm sure that's it. Though I liked the other answers. biggrin.gif

I misunderstood your dog walking comment, but yes, there are areas on the common that one is asked to avoid. It's possibly seasonal, but I'd thought there would have been information about it at the North Gate.

Not sure, don't usually go in that way.

The North Gate sounds a bit obscure. I still go for conspiracy#4.
I have to take my tablets and cocoa now.

I do know that MOD or whatever strung pipelines all over .
I was a child born in Persia. The magic carpet is no longer.
But the markers are still there. I pass by them and because
it is part of the Thetford "Battle Area", no streetview.
Otherwise.Good luck to dog walkers and nesting birds.

Ah what a good read. biggrin.gif

How do you manage without the magic carpet anymore?

Actually I do have an old Bockhara. Laid on 200 year old stripped flooring.
The only things that fly are the moths trying to get a leg over or under.

The pipework is there. It might not be used for gasoline or kerosene (Jet fuel).
but it is maintained. What is it for? Conspiracy#4..... I think I will change my posting name.

I was up in Norfolk this morning, bitterly cold but wide open skies.
The markers look like little gates but they run down the side of the A1065 for miles.

Thanks for the link. OldNewburian. An Icle bitty pipe to Newbury/Greenham.
Strange connections between Porton,Aldermaston.

I showed my son the links of MOD sites, well he knows everything.... said "move over dad"!
types in gpss and shows sites I had never heard of and with google he could trace a pipe
to a WW2 emergency base which is a pig farm now!

The 'surveyors', answer is probably correct despite my fancy for conspiracies.
The pipes are there and care needs to be taken with a JCB. Maybe nesting birds...in the winter?

Have they appeared recently, or are they old port and starboard taxiway markers left over from flying days? The red and green colouring suggests that.

I think they're newish. I rather think Ron was right and that they're something about keeping dogs out of areas for ground nesting birds.

If they are intended to keep dogs out I hope the dogs know, as thus far our small band of humans don't!!!!

If you look at Padworth on Google Earth and zoom in you will see all the storage tanks.

UFO landing pad?

Posted by: Nothing Much Feb 25 2012, 12:40 PM

I was thinking of posting that Darren, but I have already proved I am as mad as
a box of frogs anyway. So why over egg the case or cake?

It is coming up to the "Diamond Day"..

All sorts have been invited to the festivities.
What's wrong with a few shape changing lizards, "Now Mr Ike what have they been up to recently?"
