Was out and about last night asking citizens of Newbury to fill in a form asking their opinions on various local and national topics.

It was good to see someone paying an interest in local peoples views as I like many others I know are pretty apathetic toward Politicians at the moment.

Not all of the answers I put down may have pleased him mind! (Such as Yes to Trident).

I’ve met David Rendal a few times and I don’t like the way he comes over. He talks through you.

The last time I met him was at the Newbury count (European elections) and it was all about me, me, me. On the same night I talked to Richard Benyon and had a good conversation. We talked about the Parliament scandals and the European elections etc. I found his replies honest and forthright. Totally the opposite to Rendal. Benyon came over as a free thinker, where Rendal was a party man and couldn’t think outside the box. He was also very nitpicky when it came to checking the ballots; as if his life depended on it. Benyon was relaxed.

I had him knock on my door a couple of weeks ago.

One of the questions was:
who do you blame for the delay in getting a new cinema in Newbury?

1. Your Local MP
2. Your Local Council
3. Both
4. Don't know.

I felt there should have been another option,
5. The Previous Lib Dem Council and MP.

A couple of years ago he came around to my house and I bet he wished he didn’t. I answered all his questions and more.

Why ‘neither’? Somebody’s got to be blamed, even if it is only god or the tooth fairies. Personally I blame the Neanderthals for interbreeding with homo sapiens; that is where we can point the blame

The reason we have not had a cinema is because it has never been able to pay its way. Once a private operator got wind it could get subsidised, they just had to hold out until the deal was lucrative.

I don't regard a cinema as a wholesome pursuit that a council should be obliged to fund.

As the council are servants of the people and the people want the cinema then isn’t it the duty of the council to bring it to us; subsidized or not? The bottom linemust be whether it will do well.

In my view and in this instance, no. I just don't see that this is a council's obligation to provide this type of enterprise. Naturally, I am not an avid cinema goer and am therefore biased. I also have little confidence in this and the previous administration (council) that they have negotiated a good business plan for all possible outcomes. I suspect that this cinema is subsidised because the council were desperate to have the cinema in the town centre.

Rendel is full of his own self importance and always likes to be in the limelight.

He will support anything that he thinks will gain him popularity.

What is he doing now anyway?
How is he involved in local politics?
Is he the Lib Dem candidate at the next General Election?
If so they will not beat Benyon.

I am not an avid cinema goer either as I prefer to buy the DVD’s.

The trouble is would any of administrations been better? They main objective has always been themselves with little regard to what the people actually want. The question should be; was their deal the best out of a bunch of bad deals?

As for your last sentence; who can argue?

Your quotes to Biker is not really saying much, is it?

He is doing the minimum what he is entitled to do; I think biker means what more is he doing for our town other than trying to get himself reelected? Nothing and he won't get reelected.

pah! Conspicuous by his absence for the most part as far as local issues are concerned in Thatcham... 'Attends' meetings (when it suits) but rarely 'participates' in local politics.... too beneath him maybe.. Would probably prefer to fade into the shadows , with an occasional step into the light to remind people "Do you know who I used to be?"

Lee Dillon is FAR more effective in Thatcham North.... Rendel relies on past glories and the unwashed of Thatcham puttting a 'tick' against his name "coz I've 'eard of 'im.... He was on the telly wunee?"

I agree about Dave Rendel; he does talk through you and is convinced of the correctness of his own views.

He is a good reason never to vote for the Liberal Demagogues.

Talking to people I think most of them see what he is really about. I think his problem is his schooling and upbringing; an air of superiority seems to hang over him.

You know, I don't have a lot of time for any of them as I don't think they represent me anymore but my impression over the years is that Rendle did attend a lot of public engagements in his time and was very visible whereas I think Benyon does not appear to be as accessible.
Just my view.

As I said somewhere on here I found Benyon every talkative and friendly when I met him at the European count. Rendal was the opposite; aloof and not very friendly. But they are all out for themselves; power is the name of the game.

It is an interesting consensus , on this forum at least , that overall has a dislike for "Uncle David ".
Personally I always found him both affable and approachable, even though I admit he was tied to the party line , though having said that Richard Beynon has taking his undertakings responsibly and will one day make a genuine MP ( one in substance,not just name )
I suppose at the end of the day one puts a cross on a piece of paper and history is written.
