Looks like IKEA could be coming to West Berkshire

Is this a good thing?

That a store could be coming? Hard to say......
Most of their stuff is overpriced, from what I have seen, but they are riding a wave of marketing success.

I doubt they see themselves as investing in 'West Berkshire' if they have taken this site to put a store on (as opposed to just stopping a competitor while they negotiate elsewhere.... Reading will be their target market

I hate Ikea, but their stuff seems to be good value - I have never heard anyone say it is overpriced. A trip to Ikes doesn't just pee me off at the time - it pee's me off for the rest of the week as well.

I know there's a whole debate about whether it's taking the individualism out of furnishing one's home but in my view it's very good value for money if that's your prime consideration.

I'm guessing they would not only be targeting Reading but West Berkshire and Oxfordshire too.

I did, in my opinion!

I don't mind shopping, but I cannot see the logic in driving miles just to browse a shop. Better things to do..... But Ikea and other megastores have managed to create a need in peoples' minds.

I think it is good news, at least it gives people a choice. My daughter had to go to Southampton to buy some IKEA stuff.

Rather old news, that story is from December 2009. The application is due any time now, they have a great website with the plans. Providing there is significant improvements to the road network, I think everyone will be supportive of it.

Even the anti-IKEA lot?

I meant before you - and you kind of implied that you didn't actually know that. I wondered if more might come forward now!

A simple google search will give you two years of info, the plans and what few objections exist. Those objections are all based on traffic issues. I don't really have am opinion as I won't shop there, but rather suggesting what the situation is. Ikea have also promised residents that they will open at 10am to avoid increasing traffic in the morning peak, plus paying for improvements to the road network. When the application is finally submitted in the next few weeks, you will see very little objection. I know this after canvassing in the area.

Their goods are fine as long as you don't expect them to last for long. I've found their furniture falls apart in a relatively short time and I certainly wouldn't go out of my way to find one of their stores.

Is there an "anti-IKEA" lot, then? They are hardly taking over the world (unlike Tesco!). I would welcome the chance to look round one of their stores.

Yes, IKEA even parodied it in one of their TV ads.

Not formally objecting to a planning application does not mean support.......... It means their concerns are not heard, but apathy could mean people don't believe they can make a difference/that the decision has been made already.

That is one reason there is such a low turnout at many elections......

As long as they have a restaurant that sells meatballs, chips and gravy with jam, I'll be happy.

Gravy with jam sounds unpleasant. Or even just chips with gravy.

It is more like cranberry jelly than jam.

Oh I love a serious discussion smile.gif

If it's cranberry jelly to go with the meatballs that's fine. It sounded like there was jam mixed in with the gravy.

There was a long discussion somewhere else I read about chips with gravy. Someone said it's no different than roast potatoes with gravy. Then someone else said that chips are nothing like roast potatoes.

I thought chips with gravy was a Northern thing anyway (like mushy peas).
