As of now, there are just 12 days to go until Newbury Carnival on Sunday 5th July but there's still time to enter the parade.
With over 50 entries already, this year's parade is set to be one of the biggest in recent years and well over 500 people are already taking part.
Entering the carnival needn't take a lot of effort (entries range from decorated lorries through to simple 'walking' entries) and there's no upper or lower limit on the number of people you involve. What's more entry is free, so if whether you would like to promote your business, club or community group or just want to join in the fun there's nothing to stop you. On top of all that, you could win one of the cash prizes we will be awarding in various categories.
If you would like your entry to feature in our publicity before the day you'll need to contact us as soon as possible, but we will accept applications right up to the weekend of the event.
And Carnival 2009 is much more than the parade: the traditional Carnival Fete will be taking place in Goldwell Park (next to the Northcroft Centre) from 12.00pm until 6.00pm on the day and will feature arena entertainment, a fair, food and refreshments and much more. (Stalls are still available for both businesses and charities and schools which enter the parade can have a fund-raising stall at no cost).

This Sunday, 5th July, will see one of Newbury's biggest carnivals of recent years. There will be over 600 people taking part in the parade in a variety of entries. Stalls at Carnival Fete in Goldwell Park (next to the Northcroft Centre) have also been very popular, with over 50 including a wide range of refreshment, games and things to buy as well as arena displays. The fete will be opened by the Mayor at 12.00pm this Sunday and the parade leaves Pound Street at 2.00pm before passing through the centre of town.

Me and the wife went down there today and were really impressed. We had a great afternoon, enjoyed the band in the park as well as all the other stuff and the weather was beautiful. A brilliant event.

It was ok. We only went to the fete thingy in the park. Loads of nasty/chavvy people around, Tesco must have been dead. Did see a teletubby smoking a roll up......which was a highlight.

Can see why you may have been a tad disappointed if you only went to the "fete thingy" - but the Carnival thingy was brilliant. Great to see so many take part - so much effort put in by so many with the entries. Fantastic turn out to support it - probably would have suffered a bit if Andy Murray had triumphed on Friday. All organised by volunteers - well done all - great community event - same again next year please!

I thought the whole day was brilliant. Was nice to see everyone enjoying themselves, and the weather was lovely. All though i got rather sick taking my little one on the tea cups a thousand times 
He loved it though 
Only part that spoilt it for me was when we left to go home we were walking through the town and a bunch of people decided to start having a fight. Chavvy girls attacking this lad, then the mum comes over and joins in. Lads screaming back, beer in their hands. Was not nice for my son to see and hear 
The camera was watching them and following them but didn't see any police heading there way on our way home 
They girls that were screaming and shouting a had a toddler sat in the pushchair also

It is this sort of thing that gives the police a bad reputation.

Exactly what I was getting at. There were lots of police through out the day but when something is happening no one turns up.
It was horrible, families were trying to quickly walk through without their children hearing the f'ing and blinding + the fighting. Typical Newbury though, eh.

Yes, and it seems to be getting worse. I've noticed more drug addicts on our streets and alcoholics (who abuse people who passersby). It never used to be this bad. You'd also think that they'd have a few police on patrol in Newbury - especially when there was a carnival on - but I didn't see a single one as I singled through the Town.

I've def noticed more alcoholics, even driving to work i see them riding their bike with a cider in their hand!
I did see lots of police comm officers walking around when everything was going, but when it finished they scarpered!

There always have been drunks - the halfway house up at Newtown Rd doesn't help. They all used to drink in the small 'park' opposite Burger King, but the council cut all the trees down so as to remove the 'cover' the drunks where hiding behind. Same reason the trees have gone from infront of St Nicholas' Church.
I know of one case in Newbury where it has taken 2 years of near daily harrasment by drunks & druggies to get the Police to act in a proactive way - ie actually do something other than issue a verbal caution.

I'm not sure it's all the polices fault, I'd imagine a lot of it is to do with 'soft courts'. A lot of police time can be taken up when arresting these yobs, only for them to be back out on the streets in no time.

Pro-active as oppossed to re-active works a lot better, I personally believe that if the police are around the chances of trouble decreases. I saw plenty of police presence on Sunday morning in the town and as a previous poster stated they appeared to vanish come mopping up time.

People say this all the time, and I no longer think it is true, I think the police force attracts the wrong people in the form of recruits and they just don't care about the communities they serve like they used too. AmieB I hope it didn;t have too much effect on your son, I'm sure having to see this kind of thing could be quite scary.

He was asleep then woke up with it all going on, he was upset, but more to being woke up then the fighting i think! But no it wasn't very nice for my little man. Thankyou for posting

Also what chance have the yobs little kids got when they are being raised into their world. All babies are born full of innocence but theirs are soon eroded, poor mites.
