Why is there a poll on the main page asking if the Census is a "good idea"? It's happened every 10 years since 1841, so why should 2011 be any different?

It's merits are, or were, being debated on the national news recently. I understand that it might be being dropped at some point based partly, on its worth.

Does anyone know who’s paying for these drop-in sessions? And who the simpletons are that can’t complete a set of questions about who they are, where they live and what they do?

It's because some people will find it difficult to complete without assistance. I know,but it's a fact.

Annoys me how many language versions they feel necessary to offer, at great expense no doubt.

My view is that if someone comes to this country & can't be bothered to learn the native tongue, they shouldn't expect host country to translate all the hundreds of forms government has.

If they can't complete in English, as with an election paper/ DSS claim they will have to lose out, until they have better acclimatised. Losing all that dosh they've become accustomed to may save us taxpayers some dosh too

This also means that in some areas, well known for being host to certain minorities who do not like us infidels (ie the natives), will only get to read election publications put out by the narrow minded leaders of that community.
We should get tougher on demanding immigrants learn the lingo, as happens in some of US I understand.

It's widely reported that females in these communities don't actually get a free vote anyway as they are commanded who to vote for, as no doubt is common where they come from .

I tend to agree that one of the pre-requisites of gaining entry to this country with a view to permanent citizenship should be either being able to speak english on entry or being able to pass a language exam after say 12 months.
It does seem unreasonable that there is no set requirement to do this and it would have a real influence on the integration into the Britsh culture. The lack of this requirement only encourages foreign speaking groups to band together in isolation which plays against the idea of a multicultural and integrated society.

The choice of languages seems odd, too: Swedish, but no Norwegian, Danish or Finnish; Latvian and Lithuanian, but no Estonian, for example.

That is because the last census and data on comings & goings reveals a sufficient proportion of those languages are 'required'.
Mind you, no trace of Klingon, and I see dozens of them in Newbury

The worrying part is not the 'illegals'. But the fact that Lockheed Martin have been awarded the £150,000,000 contract to handle the data. Call me paranoid, but it's not a very relaxing thought. However it needs to be done for the 'local communities', and they have to keep the cattle in check somehow.

Yes, tracing family roots has become very popular. Look at all the tv programmes that trace relatives of celebrities etc. I like the idea that my relatives will know what sort of house I lived in, where I used to work, and so on. I think it is very comforting.
