That is indeed a tale of woe. I thought that I was having a bad week due to my washer dryer breaking and scratching the passenger side of my car on a lamppost but I think that you might have managed to trump that.

How did your washer dryer manage to scratch your car on a lamppost? Is it even insured to drive your car?

You'll enjoy it. Coincidentally off to Tintern on Sunday for a walk along the Wye Valley. I'm guessing you've read the Wolfe Hall books. I saw that number 3 is due anytime soon.

I'm sure most people are aware but just in case Wolf / Wolfe / Wulfe hall (or rather the site of) is just down the road adjacent to Burbage? On a similar historical note that Hamstead Park was the childhood home of William Marshall, Marshall of all England and the Great House that stood there was visited by Henry VIII.

They stayed consistent in that they would only support a version that met their 6 tests. Don’t forget our current PM voted against the May deal. If you simplify things you’ll always get the answer you want, but the truth is more nuanced.

Page 24 of Labour's 2017 general election manifesto, which helped the party gain 21 seats and increase its vote share by 10%, again pledged to "accept the referendum result".

The 'six tests' came later and had nothing to do with the referendum, only with the 'deal', an issue which was not under consideration in the referendum and was an attempt by labour to defeat the government.

However, take your childish attempt to derail this thread somewhere else, please.

Honorable mention to either

To add, I read The Testament a while back and really enjoyed it. I haven’t read The Handmaid’s Tale, but I’ve read quite a few of hers. Oryx £
& Crake was very good.

So, who are your three most favorite authors (and why?)

I was unable to start reading this book on the train due to various issues but started reading it on Christmas Eve and then couldn't put it down until I had finished reading it because it was so addictive. For those of you who are unaware of the plot of the original, it concerns a dystopian future where a religious theocracy has taken over most of what was the USA due to a falling birth rate amongst other things. One of the key plot points is that certain fertile, unmarried women are now the property of the state and are forced to have children with men in positions of authority and then give up their children to the wives of those men. I would happily give this book 5/5 and say that it is a deserved joint winner of the Booker Prize in 2019.

Thanks, good to know. I may even give it a go myself.

I'm planning to start reading The Testaments by Margaret Atwood (The Handmaid's Tale sequel) during a long railway journey on Friday. I'll submit a review once I have finished it if anybody is remotely interested.

Yes, thanks, that would be appreciated. Never read any Atwood so should be interesting.

Well, yesterday actoolly. Standing in a Volvo showroom talking to a sales guy, my phone rings, 'excuse i' I said, answered the phone only to find myself talking to a very earnest young lady from the same dealership saying " I'm calling because you registered an interest". Yes, and if you look up and to your left, the chap standby next to your colleague talking into a phone? That's me. laugh.gif made me smile anyway, not too sure about her though.

Just like to congratulate Laura and her whole team on a well fought campaign and I hope she can help bring the party back to the middle ground and fight not just for the party ideals but also for the people she is meant to represent. Well done.

As per the title really, I see people come on here and either become discouraged at the political threads or mumble something about lack of topics. So, here's your chance, cars, clothes W.A.M.T, W.C.M.U.T. IT, tradesmen, DIY, anything.

Back on the railway topic of this thread, there is a major change to the timetable as from the start of next week.
Most times will be changing.

There will now be 3 trains per hour all day each way between Newbury and Reading / London.
PLUS and hourly service all day each way from London to the West Country
PLUS an increased number of aggregate trains between the Somerset quarries and various destinations in the Home Counties.

The main message being, avoid Thatcham Level Crossing if you can!! tongue.gif

Let's hope this one works better than last year's.

It's odd that some people have been on here and complained about the lack of variety of topics yet few seem to take the time to start new threads.

This current action is meant to be about the safety critical role of the train guards in despatching trains but in my opinion it is actually a final stand by the RMT union since if a guard is no longer required on every train then it renders future strike action completely ineffective.

It may have been a safety issue, I agree. In the days of slam door trains but know? With sliding doors, pressure sensors, closed circuit surveillance, computerisation the safety issue is redundant. Apparently no guards will lose their jobs. But hey! It's an excuse for the RMT to flex it's muscles and create chaos.

Quick one to all you who have to use the trains, enjoy the next month, the longest industrial action in a generation. And labour want to give more power to the unions.

"In clip that is circulating online today, filmed in 2011 when Mr Corbyn was a backbench MP, he also claims that the then director general Mark Thompson had 'an agenda'."

"He said: 'I think there is a bias [in the BBC] towards saying that Israel has a democracy in the Middle East, that Israel has a right to exist, Israel has its security concerns.'"

Oh dear.

Meh! It's in her blood, her dad did a good job here. She's bright, personable, she grew up here. I think she's not a bad choice and I wish her luck.
