But to answer your question, I fear for our 24 hour garages. Without overtime, I can't see them being able to stock up on Jaffa Cakes any more

angry.gif Stupid!!! Don't you know we eat donuts not jaffa cakes!!!!

QUOTE
If a police officer makes an arrest near the end of their shift, they have to stop on and complete the paperwork. Not their choice, but if overtime is significantly axed, they would then have to spend a few hours on that paper work when they arrive for their next shift. So rather than getting straight onto something else, these officers would be stuck in the office sorting something out from a previous shift.

Do you know this for a fact or is it speculation?

This is a fact and happens already even with overtime.

I think some need to actually need to read the report though, overtime is not being scrapped. It is impossible to police without a certain amount of overtime. The rates at which it is being paid have been recommended for change.

My concern that some 9-5 roles (back office as some say) are actually very important ( domestic violence, Intelligence, training, probationer training) and officers wont actually apply to these posts if they can earn more working shifts. The other issue is this, I dont work after 8pm because of childcare but I do exactly the same job as the person next to me that works until midnight so really is it fair??

p.s sorry I dont know how to lift quotes from other peoples posts.

I made it to the office in Newbury but my colleagues living in Basingstoke could not get in. Our offices in London have closed early but only a few staff managed to get in.

I originally put "skeleton staff" and then knew what a clobbering I would get for that one !!! laugh.gif

Interesting, i managed to get from Basingstoke to Newbury!!

The new police protection afforded the Middleton girl is by Thames Valley & The Met; seems both forces will now have staff there & vehicles permanently in Bucklebury.

Therefore, whilst local Police cope with heavy cuts, those resources have been cut deeper at expenses of local's protection, bar one individual, who has presumably never paid any Council tax in first place:(

Hmm..

Don't panic, they won't afford this job to the front line staff at Newbury they will be provided by the already exsisting protection team. As someone else said both forces have been protecting the royals for years, nothing new.

Some rather odd manifestations of the spending cuts.

Fire brigade are closing two fire stations (Hungerford and one other) then merging with the ambulance service (which is run from Surrey). The irrelevant FBU is mighty aggrieved and planning to strike on Bonfire night.

And sorry everyone - but I've already bagged the PS3 from Newbury Fire Station, but I believe there's a multigym, monster DVD collection, and some old Pirelli calendars up for grabs.

I thought the bonfire night strikes were restricted to London, something about 12hour shifts. Oh yes 12 hours means not an official sleeping nightshift...lol

Yes and i would have the delicious sea food platter, They tried to get one in thatcham a couple of years ago but were refused, on what they said that it would smell, but i think no more than an indian , chinese or a kebab place. And the nearest one is in reading or basingstoke, sad.gif

There's no Loch Fyne is Basingstoke. Been to the one in Winchester, I was ill the following day as was someone else in our group!!

A proper steak house would be great, as long as the food is good it should do a good trade as it will be one of a kind.

QUOTE (spartacus @ Sep 15 2010, 03:42 PM) *
I take it that Mr Magoo is including his bone-fekin idle firemen in his sweeping statement? Paid top dollar to play cards, watch telly and sleep all night so they're not too tired for their second day job...... rolleyes.gif

Granted, they do have to polish the fire truck and slide down a pole every now and then.... and they also get to stand around a brazier asking passing motorists to "Honk if you Support Us!" when Mr Magoo and his chums think his workers are in need of an even greater wage packet........

But the proportion of their working life that is spent putting out fires/rescuing people from car crashes and being thoroughly UN-bone idle is EXTREMELY low....

I too thought it an ironic statement.... laugh.gif

No JayJay the solution is not that we become arsonist so that they have something to do however I do tend to agree with spartacus and perhaps his point was McGuirk should get his own house in order before raining down on everyone elses????

Yes the fire service do do a valuable job and are much needed but when compared to the work load of other public services in doesnt compare. I can say that I have one in the family, I know what he does and how much he does it for!!!

What's the difference?
Apart from selling overpriced, fattening goo!
(Oh no, sorry they both do that! tongue.gif )

No more fattening than the coffee or tea you make at home!

Starbucks coffee is a bit smoother that Costa, personally I prefer Nero. Their Frappe Lattes are lush and made with proper coffee and milk not that horrible syrup stuff used by the other two!

Odd isn't it - 'affordable housing' in rural communities 'council housing' in urban. What's wrong with Turnpike? Does the type of house you live in really determine your status? Probably needs another thread but Ihave a problem with 'affordable housing' if we paid people properly they wouldn't need it.

I'm sure there really isnt much wrong with Turnpike but GMR makes it sound like its the bronx!! laugh.gif Therefore my reference to his post.

Last time I went to Bardown the majority of it had already been flattened. The houses still standing were those that have been purchased by the occupiers over the years. They are just rebuilding an estate, so again I don't really see your point GMR?? Affordable housing does not always mean the place will end up like Turnpike. Key workers are entitled to affordable housing so what are you saying about them????

That's a gross over-reaction to my comment.

I expressed surprise that armed police officers would attend an ordinary incident. Surely I am entitled to be surprised, since we don't live in the wild west, and the police here when I last looked are not routinely armed.

No there not so i'm not sure why the surprise that they would muck in, surely you wouldnt want them sat around waiting for an incident that required them.

TDH has not clarified what he saw. We are not sure if he was saying there was an armed response vehicle in the street or he actually saw officers with guns which to be fair if that was the case Nwn would have something in the news section .

Not sure anyone's actually answered Ossy's q about whether these 'armed police' actually had their guns out!

Way I understand it is similar to JayJay.

'Armed' police are police officers that are trained in use of firearms and have 'close' access to such firearms.

They do still attend the standard and more basic jobs that other police attend and will be wearing their holsters and other kit but should not regularly be waving those firearms around unless it is a firearms job.

Could be wrong of course!

You are correct unless of course you are at an airport or other such similar site then will be armed all the time.

Yes...police actually getting off their fat **** to attend an incident!!!

ossy1, you probably know what is meant...why did it require an armed response? It presumably wouldn't be for a bail jumper, would it?

You don't do yourself any favours sometimes.

Yes it can be for anything including bail jumpers as you call them.

Ive given up trying to do myself any favours on here, if i say something positive someone turns it into a negative and if i say something negative someone will have a go at me. The freedom of speech you all go on about clearly doesnt apply to me.
However i know i work hard and do my best and thats all that matters.

We're still no closer to an answer to the OP.

I'm surprised at ossy1's response that armed police might attend a routine incident. This isn't the US of A (yet, thank goodness).

What are you surprised about exactly, police officers attending incidents????? What ever next!

Jayjay is right, thankfully they don't sit around drinking tea whilst waiting for a firearms incident to happen. If you call the police then you will get what's available, neighbourhood, response, traffic, armed response, dog handler. Thought the public would be grateful of that, seems not, can't win!! blink.gif
