Folks, here's the missing words and the full story appears online tomorrow (Saturday).

'Vehicle Control Services Ltd declined to discuss the matter, but asked for any queries to be put in writing.

They have not yet responded to written questions.'

Do we know that e-mail address is monitored? Anyroad, I thought we could be more creative...

One and all, Admin has seen the post!
Like every forum, we are under constant attack from spammers trying to join the site which clogs our validation queue. We will sort this/or have something new in place in the next couple of days.

And yes, the rules and regs should be re-worded.

In the mean time, stick with us please and keep on 'debating!'

Thanks to the escalating abuse, we will close this thread now. If members are having difficulty being civil to each other, can we suggest they stop posting and join another forum. If the abuse persists, action will be taken.

QUOTE (Andy Capp @ Dec 14 2011, 09:35 AM) *
My evidence comes from the fact that if one performs an Internet search for Turner and Donnington, this picture is almost non-existent. If Turner had painted this, you would get many. This painting might be Turner, but I fear not by Britain's favourite artist.

It is Drewwitts that are making the claim: Lot 82: Donnington Castle, Newbury, Berkshire by JMW Turner RA

Morning all. We have checked (again) the authenticity of the painting with Dreweatts who have confirmed it is an original watercolour by JMW Turner.

Well admin? You've had most of Thursday, all of Friday, (all day Sat and Sun for a few 'off the record' phone calls), it's now Monday lunchtime (almost) Got anything for us?

As mentioned earlier in the thread, how long does it take to answer the question " is it likely that monies taken from Car Parks not maintained, owned, operated or run by SLI could, under certain conditions, make it's way back to SLI's coffers? and that this was agreed by WBC"? We don't need to know the amounts, that's for later. It's a yes / no answer at this stage.

Or can we go back to discussing this now, since we wouldn't want Newburytoday to be seen as an arm of the Council would we?

Sorry, we have been waiting for some figures which are as yet not forthcoming from WBC, but the deal between SLI and WBC which states that proceeds over a certain amount (based on parking income from ticket sales from town centre car parks not including Kennet Centre in 2007/8) is in place and has been confirmed to us by WBC. We will keep you updated as soon as we get the monetary value of the agreement which we have asked for several times.

In the interests of accuracy, can I ask you to 'watch this space' regarding this thread and post no more comments for the time being. We are in discussion with WBC about some of the facts surrounding this story and we will let know when this has been resolved.
Thanks for your co-operation.

NEWBURY is dull.
In fact, it is “very, very dull.”
Who says so? National newspaper food critic and author Jay Rayner says so, in an online blog for The Guardian.
In an unusual analogy, Mr Rayner insists: “Emmental is, at first sight, the Newbury of cheeses: it's solid, workmanlike, but very, very dull. Everybody knows it's there but few think they have any reason to visit..... just as the boring town in Berkshire is a place of light industry and mid-range technology firms - the sort of place where really hard unglamorous work gets done - so emmental is the workhorse of the cheese world.”
As if already hearing the knives being sharpened for him, Mr Rayner ameliorates his comments by adding: “It is upon emmental's broad, solid and unassuming shoulders that the sexy supermodels of the cheese world – the gruyères, Comtés and Beaufort – stand.”
Newburytoday.co.uk contacted Mr Rayner via his Twitter account for a chat.
He replied: “Would you mind awfully if I don't?”
Actually, we do. A little. But what do you think? Does he have a point?
And if Mr Rayner was to be compared to a cheese, which one would he be?
We have one in mind. But what do you think?

Morning all. For the record (again), the NWN has not received any letters on the subject of CCTV apart from the one mentioned in the previous post from Richard Garvie which he resubmitted and which appears in this week's NWN. Can I suggest that anyone who says they have sent in letters, resubmit them to editor@newburynews.co.uk or post/hand deliver them to the NWN in Faraday Road, Newbury, RG14 2DW and they will be considered for publication next week. And yes, there will be a new CCTV story this week.

We haven't had any comments from the Admins on this problem (a post from them would be helpful).

It's my guess that only a small range of IP addresses are involved with the current attack, which could be banned without affecting anyone's freedom of speech. But we won't know if it's coming from a single source, or whether the site has suddenly appeared in a general spammer's list of sites to hit unless the Admins tell us.

Thanks for your concern and thoughts all. We are aware of the problem and are working on a solution which will probably involve a software upgrade very soon. In the mean time, if you see anything on the forum which shouldn't been there (no obvious jokes please about various members) please let us know asap. Thanks again.

My sources tell me that NWN did get a number of replies. Richard, do you have an email address that people (general public) can contact you on that you are happy for people to use? If so, would you post here or PM it to me?

Just for the record, your 'sources' are wrong. The only letter the newspaper received was from Richard Garvie as mentioned above which is being considered for publication for next week.

Readers' photographs, in this case those in the gallery marked Your Snow Pictures, are digitally marked when we submit them to the gallery and can not be purchased by anyone.

Lets keep away from the personal stuff please. The forum has been full of interesting, informed and grown up debate in the last few weeks in particular. Let's try and keep it that way.
