Everywhere in Newbury and Thatcham there are a load of roadworks.
Especially in the middle of the day (read, when I am on my LUNCH sad.gif)

There are some by that little Restaurant near Stoney Lane in Thatcham, some down near the Burdwood Centre and only yesterday did they finish the major resurfacing works along near BP in Newbury.
No doubt there are loads more.

I wonder what the point is, when this winter it will all be ruined when it's freezing every night and the cheap, patchjob repairs don't hold up.

That's an assumption, though true in many cases, if resurfacing has been done, I would expect it to hold, at least for one winter.

The point would be to enable you to drive your pride and joy without damage and in safety.

take a packed lunch & then you can sit in the office & not have to worry about sitting in your car for 3/4 of your lunch break

Very true Biker!
I think the issue is that, there are no routes to avoid the delays. To get to where my Mother lives, I'm stuck at Temporary traffic lights with multi-way control either way I go.
Just perhaps would be a good idea to plan things without bringing Newbury/Thatcham to a halt at peak times (eg lunch time). Why not do the work 11pm-6am like they do on the nations motorways.

Beacuse motorways tend to be well away from built up areas where folk are trying to sleep.
