I spotted one in Stanley Road closely inspecting a red sports car so I pulled over and asked him if there were any parking restrictions on that road (knowing full well that there wasn't).

No he said continuing to explain he was just admiring it whilst doing his rounds.

I then let on that I lived in a nearby road and that none in the area had parking restrictions.

He then asked what it had to do with me and I told him it had lots to do with mr as I pay local tax and therefore his wages and I was in good mind to report him to the Council for bunking off work.

He implored me not to and said he would get back to where he should be straight away.

Maybe we need inspectors to inspect the inspectors which is kind of funny and severely annoying at the same time.

While their role is parking enforcement, is it not a good idea to have a uniform wandering around roads with a radio. While not replacing the over-stretched Police, an extra pair of eyes never hurts.

Using Google Earth, I can see yellow lines either end of Stanley Road, plus offstreet parking for which access could be denied if someone parked a car blocked the spaces, and pavements which people often illegally park on.

Therefore, would parking enforcement officers be perfectly entitled to walk down and ticket offenders? Would it be part of their normal duties? Was it therefore a tad inflammatory the comments made to the officer by the OP?

If the OP talked to me in that manner he'd immediately be put straight with some verbal or just ignored, public worker or not.

Not to mention the 'I pay your wages...' comment is one of the most childish thing you can say to a public sector worker.

I've no doubt I pay your wages too, when I purchase any goods or services you provide.

Yes, but in the private sector you have a choice to buy, in any case, the warden seemed to take the point, suggesting some sort of guilt!

and you've never taken 5 minutes to walk around the car park to get some air, taken a bit longer to get a drink etc.etc...?

Darren

Do you not realise how contentious these new positions they occupy are?

I think you'll find most people on here will agree that this highly sensitive issue requires those employed to carry out these duties to be on their best behaviour.

I don't find them contentious in the slightest. When you consider Newbury is years behind other towns and cities in having parking enforced by council employed wardens, the issue is why did it take so long.

The only ones who seem to be complaining are those who are on the wrong end of a ticket. For years people have got away with parking where ever and when ever they like because the police are far to busy dealing with much more serious matters (yes, including speed enforcement) and the traffic wardens employed by the police were far too few in numbers. Now they are finding that tickets are being issued where before they were not.

There is a huge difference between being "on their best behaviour" and being perfect for every single second. Taking a few minutes to admire a sports car is hardly something worth berating someone in the street over.

However, in that spirit I shall be spending my rest days at the smoking area of the council offices admonishing the workers for bunking off on my coin.

I personally don't think Newbury is a big enough town and had enough parking issues to warrant these new parking enforcement officers, so I would say their employment is contentious. I would be really interested to know how much money they have made for the council in comparison to the salaries they are being paid.

Never really seen any evidence of this, except for the odd speed camera coin fest along Monks Lane or Friday/Saturday outside liquid. When was the last time any Newbury resident saw a couple of Policeman walking down Northbrook Street on a Saturday afternoon? Do they ever walk the beat anymore?

Agree.......although it could be the lack of parking issues that gives them so much free time.

Blimey you would need a whole army to do that job, better start recruiting.

It wasn't the admiring of the sports car, but the fact that he admitted he was way off his route.

If you see WBC staff smoking in their work time report it because I know it is against their contract of employment.

If they are smoking outside in their lunch break or some other break then it shouldn't have anything to do with anybody else. Contracts have such clauses in just in case they might need it.... but I doubt the management are that authoritarian.

Of course there are parking restrictions there, you can't park on the pavement or double park blocking the road and so on.

As pointed out earlier the "I pay your wages" line is amazingly petty as everyone pays everyone else's wages to some extent. We also all have some choice as to where we live, if I didn't like the services offered in Newbury it wouldn't be too hard for me to move into Hampshire or up to Oxfordshire for example, so we do have a say over who we pay for our public services.

...but we have no choice if we wish to stay! I can switch a number of service providers while living in Newbury, but not the Council.

Of course you can, we get a choice every four years to switch providers for Newbury. You yourself can become a service provider too.
