Pretty grim reading: http://www.newburytoday.co.uk/News/Article...articleID=16888The fact that the offender didn't think twice about attempting this in the middle of the day possibly says a lot about what he thought his chances of being caught were. I would have thought that, even without wanting to cause a panic, the police would still have warned women to take extra care, rather than saying that there is no indication of an increased risk. Thoroughly unpleasant. And well done to the victim for having the courage to fight him off.

QUOTE (JeffG @ Jun 1 2011, 03:55 PM) A very unpleasant incident as you say. But did they mean the River Lambourn? The canal goes nowhere near Shaw Road. I did wonder the same, as I couldn't understand the link. Would the Lambourn have a tow-path though?

QUOTE (massifheed @ Jun 1 2011, 04:01 PM) Would the Lambourn have a tow-path though? No, it was never navigable.

QUOTE (Richard Garvie @ Jun 1 2011, 06:52 PM) The river Lambourn has a path that runs between the swan and Turnpike Lane. Not really a toe path as such, but certainly runs along the river. But the story says it happened on Shaw Road on the canal path. The canal isn't there and there is no path along the river at that point.

QUOTE (Rosewinelover @ Jun 2 2011, 12:14 PM) does not feel like a safe place anymore Because of our lily livered, liberal attitude to crime and criminals along with a lack of discipline, respect and morals in upbringing in schools and the home, it isn't. (See for reference "Human Rights Act" thread.)

(See for reference "Human Rights Act" thread.) We have gaoled more people in the last 10 years and crime has gone down (apparently), yet the Tories, contrary to their manifesto, want to release more people than Labour did. The problem is, everyone wants all these things but complain when we are taxed to pay for it.

QUOTE (Biker1 @ Jun 2 2011, 06:41 PM) Because of our lily livered, liberal attitude to crime and criminals. Indeed, lock 'em for a long time, bring back the Death Penalty etc etc....yeah that'll work. America must be one of the safest places in the world by now then.

QUOTE (Alice @ Jun 3 2011, 01:25 PM) But when you read further it says, "The victim kicked out at the man and he ran off." I don't really see how it can be classed as sexual when nothing happened. Why do you assume that nothing happened? The article implies that she kicked out at the man after the alleged assault had already taken place. The police seem to be taking it seriously, anyway. The only thing unclear about the report is the actual location.

America must be one of the safest places in the world by now then. Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit. Do YOU have a solution - or isn't there one? (Imagine it was YOUR daughter / wife who had been attacked.)

QUOTE (Biker1 @ Jun 3 2011, 02:18 PM) Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit. Just following your train of thought to it's logical conclusion. That's all. No need to get shirty just because maybe your knee-jerk reaction is wrong.

QUOTE (Alice @ Jun 3 2011, 01:25 PM) This must have been a horrible experience for the woman involved. However, I'm a bit concerned over NWN's report on the incident. They call it a "sexual" assault. But when you read further it says, "The victim kicked out at the man and he ran off." I don't really see how it can be classed as sexual when nothing happened.
This irresponsible reporting can only lead to panic within the community and that's never a good thing. It is to do with the legal definition of assault, together with some apparent sexual intent we don't know about, I'd guess.
